Rainy Afternoon On The Road // Cook Green Jackfruit For Tonight

Hello!

The past two weeks when preparing for the iftar we were late always. I always finished cooking past 6 pm because in the afternoon we would go at around 4 PM. So today I decided to go to the market early so that I could prepare the food early. As we step outside the house were were welcome by dark heavy clouds. Guessing by the look of it anytime the rain would pour. As we started walking on the cemented road the rain slowly poured. That's the situation until we reached the market.

¡Hola!

I went to the store where I usually buy spices and other goods. This store sell some goods in a much cheaper price than the other stores so this is my to go to store. There were few customers accomodated before us so I decided to pick bell pepper, scallions and oil so that when the other customers left they could compute how much those are. These are the only spices that I needed because we still have other spices at home.

After it was computed, I asked one of the sales boy to shred one coconut. I will be cooking Green jackfruit today so the most important ingredient for it is the coconut milk. We waited for about three minutes before the shredded coconut was handed to us. Then we went out of the store and went to the fish section. Same as usual I chose to buy the cheaper fish which was the sardine fish. The price of it today was way cheaper than the previous days. I'm happy and thankful that it's price lowered meaning I could save a few cents from the budget I allocated for it. After paying we started walking back home.

When we were almost reach the intersection road (the way to our house) the rain started preparing heavily so we have to stop on the side of the road where we could shelter inorder for us not to get wet. Eventhough we had umbrella still it isn't gave us a guarantee that we wouldn't get wet. Witnessing the rain pouring hard in every corner I'm very sure the water on the road will slowly rise. If this kind of rain last for an hour or more the water would reach below our knees. So while standing on the side of the road I was taking photos of the vehicles that pass by. Unfortunately some photos were blurry as the vehicles were moving fast.

We were standing on the side of the road for some minutes already but there's no sign that the rain would stop so we decided to just go even if we would get wet while walking along the road. Surely the lower parts of our pants were soaking wet because that part can't be protected from the rain. Despite feeling cold and felt the heaviness of the lower part of our pants we slowly walk back home.

While we were walking I saw some cows whose body were already wet from the rain but still continued eating. I wonder if they felt cold but maybe they really feel it. It's just that they don't have a choice but to endure it until their owner come and get them. I used to remember how my grandma took care of our cows before. She was very attentive to them. When it's hot she would put them under the tree so they won't be exposed to heat. While when it rains she would get them and transfer them to a space where there's roof so that they wouldn't get wet and felt cold. But here in our place, rain or shine the owners would just get their cows in the late afternoon.

Few minutes of walking under the rain we finally arrived at home. I immediately asked for a towel so that I could change because I already felt cold all over my body eventhough it's only my foot and legs that get wet. After changing my clothes I rested for few minutes before proceeded to my work. The first thing that I did after resting was get the jackfruit that my husband picked few days ago. I transferred it to the sink so it would be easier for me to peel and clean it. I opened the jackfruit but halted when I noticed that the meat of it started getting yellow. This kind of jackfruit meat is not good to be cook because its taste isn't the same with the green jackfruit. So I asked my eldest son to go to our neighbor who have jackfruit in their backyard. I told him to ask permission if we could get one jackfruit because we will cook it as our viand on our iftar. The elderly woman told him to get the jackfruits that he see. He brought two jackfruit at home.

I peeled and cleaned the jackfruit that was on the right side. The jackfruit has this white color juice that would stick to my hand so before I peeled it I rub a small amount of oil on my palms. This is to avoid those juices stick on my hand and it wold be easier to removed it if there were few that would stick. While I was feeling the jackfruit my son prepared the spices (scallions, bell pepper, ginger, garlic and onion) that I would used in cooking. When I finished cleaning the jackfruit I started extracting milk from the shredded coconut and poured it in the pot where the jackfruit and spices are prepared.

This is the cooked jackfruit. I added turmeric powder to it that's why its color yellow. It took two hours for me to cook this. But in other cases I cooked it longer so that the taste of it would absorbed to the jackfruit that would made it more savory. Though this wasn't cook longer still it taste so delicious. We paired this with the fried sardine fish. This is how my day ends. Thank you so much for taking time to view my blog today.
