My First Eid'l Fitr Experience But Definitely Not The Last

Today is the Eid Celebration here in the Philippines. This will be my first time celebrating Eid with my family so I was very excited because I can finally celebrate this day with other Muslims in the community. We woke up at 4:30 AM to pray the Fajr (morning) prayer. By 5:30 AM we started preparing ourselves because we will be going to the barangay hall ground where the Khutba (It's a formal occasion for public preaching in Islamic tradition, often delivered by an Imam (religious leader) will be. Though there is a larger place where Khutba is but we prefer the barangay hall ground because it's near our place. As we finished preparing ourselves we didn't go immediately to the said place because it was raining outside. Thankfully when it's almost 6:30 am the rain stopped. We then went to the barangay hall ground. Along the way we meet some people who would also go to the place we headed to. My husband meet some of his friends on the road. While they were busy chatting I on the other hand was very careful with my steps because the road was muddy and slippery. I did wear socks so my feet didn't get dirty eventhough it was muddy. As we arrived to the barangay hall ground there were many people already. It's very hard to find a dry spot but glad that the barangay workers assisted us and lent some of the clean cloth that could cover the ground before we put our prayer mats. Before I seated on my prayer mat I had to removed my socks because it get wet while I was finding a dry spot earlier.

The Khutba didn't started immediately so some were busy chatting with their family and friends. Since I didn't have someone whom I knew on the spot where I was situated I did recite the Takhbeer. Not long after the Imam showed in front of us and started the khutba. The photo above was taken in the middle of the Khutba. The people are very attentive to the preachings of the Imam. The only noise that I could be heard was the kids voices shouting, playing and running at the back. My feet get numb when the Khutba was almost over so I had to stretch it one at a time.

When it ended the people started eating the foods that were being served. The foods served were; chopsuey (Chop Suey is a stir-fried vegetable dish that is cooked with meats such as chicken, etcetera), pancit bihon (this is a stir fried noodles with thinly sliced cabbage, carrots and small sized cut of chicken meat), beef randang (it's made of beef, palapa, fresh turmeric, lemongrass, chili pounded lightly, sugar, coconut milk, kalamansi but some preferred tamarind juice, and lastly the roasted coconut), maja blanca (Maja blanca is a creamy, gelatinous Filipino dessert made primarily from coconut milk) and the yellow rice.

While eating I watched some people going home. After eating and setting my plate aside, I looked around. I was getting sad watching that there were some foods that weren't consumed by some people. I only spotted two or three plates that were no food left. Watching the foods I suddenly remembered those young children from Palestine who cries out because they were hungry and there's no food to eat. We're very lucky that we have food in our table but it's a sad reality that not all people learn to appreciate the blessings given to them (sigh). After folding my mat I noticed two women gathering few leftover foods. I think they would gave it to their pet but there were still so many foods left. I also noticed in some plates that the only food consumed were the viands and the rice were left out.

My husband fetch me and we went home together with his friends. It was a nice feeling celebrating Eid with my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters. The rest of the morning were spent taking a rest and after the noon prayer I get back to bed because I wasn't feeling well. I felt pain in my back and felt that my body is heavy. I didn't know why I suddenly felt this way so I had to asked my husband to apply ointment on my back and he asked me to take a full rest in the afternoon.

Around 4 PM, I heard my husband telling my youngest son to go to his friend's house because he was called but my youngest son hadn't heard him. My eldest son went with my youngest. When they came back they brought foods. There's fish piaparan. A fish dish that it is cooked in coconut milk, turmeric powder, scallions, ginger, shredded coconut, and season it with salt and seasoning granules. There's pancit bihon and spaghetti too. The spaghetti was so creamy and it taste even better because it was cold. I think it was newly removed from the refrigerator. Lastly is the yellow rice and bread. I didn't take photo of the bread though.

This was how the day ends today. I felt a little better now but still need some rest so my body will finally feel okay.
