Dear friends,
This year, we have made trellises for bean plants in different places along our pond. The plants have grown quite well and have also flowered on time. However, a problem has arisen in another place—the flowers are falling off immediately after they appear, but they are not setting fruit. This problem has become a cause of great concern for us.
I quickly reported the matter to the local agricultural officials. The field level agricultural workers came and examined our bean plants and said that it is mainly a weather-related problem. However, they identified some other reasons that could be responsible for the bean flower falling off. Today, I will discuss those reasons and possible solutions with you.
Main reasons for bean flower falling off
- Lack of favorable pollination
The presence of bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects is important for pollination. But if there is cold weather or excessive use of pesticides in winter, their numbers decrease, resulting in pollination being hampered and the flowers falling off.
- Drought or excess water
Regular watering is essential for bean plants. However, excessive watering softens the roots, reducing the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and causing the flowers to fall off. Again, if there is not enough water, the plant becomes weak.
- Lack of adequate nutrition
If the bean plant does not have enough phosphorus (P) and potash (K), the flowers will not survive properly. In particular, if there is too much nitrogen, only the plant grows, but the flowers do not produce fruit.
- High temperature or low humidity
If the daytime temperature is too high and the humidity in the air is low, the flowers will dry out and fall off.
- Disease and insect attacks
If the bean plant has thrips, aphids (insects that stick to the flowers) and fungal diseases, the flowers will fall off.
Solutions and Remedies
- Ensure Pollination
Use less pesticides and plant other flowering plants in the garden to attract pollinating insects such as bees.
Gently shaking the flowers by hand in the morning or afternoon can increase pollination.
- Proper Water Management
Keep the soil moist by mulching (straw, dry leaves) at the base of the plant.
Make arrangements for drainage in case of excessive rain.
- Apply balanced fertilizer
It is good to use super phosphate and potash fertilizers every 15-20 days.
Using organic fertilizers such as compost or cow dung increases soil fertility.
- Temperature and humidity control
To protect the plant from excessive cold in winter, a shelter can be made around the plant with bamboo or polythene.
Spraying water in the morning or afternoon during the dry season maintains humidity.
- Disease and pest prevention
Spraying neem oil keeps pests away.
It is necessary to cut off the damaged parts of the affected tree.
Use less chemical pesticides and choose disease-resistant varieties.

এ বছর আমাদের পুকুরপাড়ের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় শিম গাছের জন্য মাচা তৈরি করেছি। গাছগুলো বেশ ভালোভাবে বেড়ে উঠেছে এবং সময়মতো ফুলও এসেছে। তবে সমস্যা দেখা দিয়েছে অন্য জায়গায়—ফুল আসার পরই সেগুলো ঝরে যাচ্ছে, কিন্তু ফল ধরছে না। এই সমস্যাটি আমাদের জন্য বেশ দুশ্চিন্তার কারণ হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছিল।
আমি বিষয়টি দ্রুত স্থানীয় কৃষি কর্মকর্তাদের জানাই। মাঠপর্যায়ের কৃষি কর্মীরা এসে আমাদের শিম গাছ পরীক্ষা করেন এবং জানান, এটি মূলত আবহাওয়া জনিত সমস্যা। তবে তারা আরও কিছু কারণ চিহ্নিত করেন, যা শিম ফুল ঝরে যাওয়ার জন্য দায়ী হতে পারে। আজ আমি আপনাদের সেই কারণ ও সম্ভাব্য সমাধান নিয়ে আলোচনা করব।
শিম ফুল ঝরে যাওয়ার প্রধান কারণ
১. অনুকূল পরাগায়নের অভাব
পরাগায়নের জন্য মৌমাছি, প্রজাপতি ও অন্যান্য পরাগবাহী পতঙ্গের উপস্থিতি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। কিন্তু যদি শীতকালে ঠান্ডা আবহাওয়া বা কীটনাশকের ব্যবহার বেশি হয়, তবে এরা কমে যায়, ফলে পরাগায়ন বাধাগ্রস্ত হয় এবং ফুল ঝরে পড়ে।
২. খরা বা অতিরিক্ত পানি
শিম গাছের জন্য নিয়মিত পানি সরবরাহ জরুরি। তবে অতিরিক্ত পানি দিলে শিকড় নরম হয়ে যায়, ফলে গাছের পুষ্টি গ্রহণের ক্ষমতা কমে যায় এবং ফুল ঝরে পড়ে। আবার, পর্যাপ্ত পানি না থাকলেও গাছ দুর্বল হয়ে যায়।
৩. পর্যাপ্ত পুষ্টির অভাব
শিম গাছে পর্যাপ্ত ফসফরাস (P) ও পটাশ (K) না থাকলে ফুল ঠিকমতো টিকে থাকে না। বিশেষ করে, নাইট্রোজেন বেশি থাকলে শুধু গাছের বৃদ্ধি হয়, কিন্তু ফুল থেকে ফল তৈরি হয় না।
৪. উচ্চ তাপমাত্রা বা নিম্ন আর্দ্রতা
যদি দিনের তাপমাত্রা খুব বেশি হয় এবং বাতাসে আর্দ্রতার পরিমাণ কম থাকে, তবে ফুল শুকিয়ে গিয়ে ঝরে পড়ে।
৫. রোগ ও পোকামাকড়ের আক্রমণ
শিম গাছে থ্রিপস, অ্যাফিডস (ফুলে আঠালো পোকা) এবং ফাঙ্গাসজনিত রোগ হলে ফুল ঝরে যায়।
সমাধান ও প্রতিকার ব্যবস্থা
১. পরাগায়ন নিশ্চিত করা
কীটনাশক কম ব্যবহার করা এবং পরাগায়ক পতঙ্গ যেমন মৌমাছি আকৃষ্ট করার জন্য বাগানে অন্যান্য ফুলগাছ লাগানো।
সকালে বা বিকেলে হাত দিয়ে হালকাভাবে ফুল নাড়িয়ে দিলে পরাগায়ন বাড়তে পারে।
২. সঠিকভাবে পানি ব্যবস্থাপনা
গাছের গোড়ায় মালচিং (খড়, শুকনো পাতা) দিয়ে মাটি আর্দ্র রাখা।
অতিরিক্ত বৃষ্টি হলে পানি নিষ্কাশনের ব্যবস্থা করা।
৩. সুষম সার প্রয়োগ করা
প্রতি ১৫-২০ দিন পরপর সুপার ফসফেট ও পটাশ সার ব্যবহার করা ভালো।
জৈব সার যেমন কম্পোস্ট বা গোঁবর সার ব্যবহার করলে মাটির উর্বরতা বৃদ্ধি পায়।
৪. তাপমাত্রা ও আর্দ্রতা নিয়ন্ত্রণ
শীতকালে অতিরিক্ত ঠান্ডা থেকে রক্ষা করতে গাছের চারপাশে বাঁশ বা পলিথিন দিয়ে আড়াল তৈরি করা যেতে পারে।
শুষ্ক মৌসুমে সকালে বা বিকেলে পানি স্প্রে করলে আর্দ্রতা বজায় থাকে।
৫. রোগবালাই প্রতিরোধ
নিম তেল স্প্রে করলে কীটপতঙ্গ দূর হয়।
আক্রান্ত গাছ থেকে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত অংশ কেটে ফেলা দরকার।
রাসায়নিক কীটনাশক কম ব্যবহার করা এবং রোগ প্রতিরোধী জাত নির্বাচন করা।
Our Experience
As per the advice of the agricultural officer, we reduced the use of pesticides, used organic fertilizers and watered regularly for pollination. After a few days, we saw that the newly emerged flowers were no longer falling off, but had started to set pods quite well. We were all very happy with this.
Our experience may be useful for those who are cultivating pods. Hopefully, following the above advice will reduce the problem of pod flower falling to a great extent.

Beans are one of the popular vegetables in Bangladesh. They are easy to cultivate and yield good yields in a short time. However, in some cases, bean plants grow excessively, but the yield is low. I had such a problem with my pond-side bean plants. After consulting an agricultural officer, I realized that this could be mainly due to excess nutrients, water and space.
Reasons for excessive growth of bean plants
In my case, I also noticed that the bean plants had grown excessively tall and had grown a lot of leaves, but the yield was very low. The agricultural officer's field workers said that the plants grew excessively due to the fertile soil lying on the pond and adequate water. Usually, when the plant grows too many leaves and vines, all the energy of the plant is spent on growing vines instead of flowers and fruits. As a result, even if the flowers come, they fall off and the bean yield decreases.
What is the solution?
- Fertilizer and water control: If you give excess nitrogen fertilizer, the plant grows more vines, so the amount of potash and phosphorus should be increased. The amount of watering can also be reduced slightly.
- Pruning: By cutting off unnecessary vines and leaves from the tree, the tree focuses its energy on flowers and fruits.
- Monitoring: If flowers are coming but fruits are not forming, then light hand pollination can be done.
Benefits of Bean Cultivation in Winter
Our bean plants started bearing fruits little by little from the beginning of the month of Paush. Due to the favorable weather during winter, the bean plants flowered more and the yield was also good. Now the entire loft is filled with new flowers and beans, which is really a joy to see.
Proper care in bean cultivation improves the yield. Although some problems arise due to the use of pondside space, it can be fixed with proper care. Those who have free space can cultivate beans if they want and can follow these tips to get a good yield.
আমাদের অভিজ্ঞতা
আমরা কৃষি কর্মকর্তার পরামর্শ অনুযায়ী পরাগায়নের জন্য কীটনাশক কমানো, জৈব সার ব্যবহার এবং নিয়মিত পানি দেওয়ার ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করি। কিছুদিন পর দেখি, নতুন করে আসা ফুলগুলো আর ঝরে যাচ্ছে না, বরং বেশ ভালোভাবে শিম ধরতে শুরু করেছে। এতে আমরা সবাই খুব আনন্দিত হয়েছি।

শিম গাছের অতিরিক্ত বৃদ্ধির কারণ
আমার ক্ষেত্রেও লক্ষ্য করেছিলাম, শিম গাছগুলো অত্যধিক লম্বা হয়েছে এবং প্রচুর পাতা গজিয়েছে, কিন্তু ফলন খুবই কম ছিল। কৃষি অফিসারের মাঠকর্মীরা জানালেন যে, পুকুরপাড়ে পড়ে থাকা উর্বর মাটি এবং পর্যাপ্ত পানি পাওয়ার কারণে গাছগুলো অতিরিক্ত বাড়তে থাকে। সাধারণত, গাছে যখন খুব বেশি পাতা ও লতা বৃদ্ধি পায়, তখন গাছের সব শক্তি ফুল ও ফলে না গিয়ে লতাপাতা গজানোর পেছনে ব্যয় হয়। ফলে ফুল আসলেও সেটি ঝরে পড়ে এবং শিমের ফলন কমে যায়।
সমাধান কী?
১. সার ও পানি নিয়ন্ত্রণ: অতিরিক্ত নাইট্রোজেন সার দিলে গাছ বেশি লতাপাতা গজায়, তাই পটাশ ও ফসফরাসের পরিমাণ বাড়াতে হবে। পানি দেওয়ার পরিমাণও সামান্য কমানো যেতে পারে।
- ছাঁটাই করা: গাছের অপ্রয়োজনীয় লতা ও পাতা ছেঁটে দিলে গাছ তার শক্তি ফুল ও ফলে কেন্দ্রীভূত করে।
- পর্যবেক্ষণ করা: যদি ফুল আসছে কিন্তু ফল হচ্ছে না, তাহলে হাত দিয়ে হালকা পরাগায়ন করানো যেতে পারে।
শীতকালে শিম চাষের সুবিধা
পৌষ মাসের শুরু থেকেই আমাদের শিম গাছে অল্প অল্প করে ফল আসতে শুরু করেছিল। শীতের সময় আবহাওয়া অনুকূল থাকায় শিম গাছে বেশি ফুল ধরে এবং ফলনও ভালো হয়। এখন পুরো মাচা নতুন ফুল ও শিমে ভরে গেছে, যা দেখে সত্যিই আনন্দ লাগছে।
শিম চাষে সঠিক পরিচর্যা করলে ফলন আরও ভালো হয়। পুকুরপাড়ের জায়গা ব্যবহারের কারণে কিছু সমস্যা দেখা দিলেও, উপযুক্ত যত্নের মাধ্যমে তা ঠিক করা সম্ভব। যাদের ফাঁকা জায়গা আছে, তারা চাইলে শিম চাষ করতে পারেন এবং ভালো ফলন পেতে এই টিপস অনুসরণ করতে পারেন।
This year, our decision to cultivate beans on the banks of the pond was a new experience. We originally started cultivating them with the intention of selling them in the vegetable market, but the bumper harvest of beans is really gratifying.
Our main success is not only selling beans, but also creating a beautiful loft with our own hard work and ensuring fresh vegetables for our family is a great achievement.
