Classic American Beef Burger Recipe

Ingredients (for 4 burgers):

  • For the beef patties:
    • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat for juiciness)
    • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for binding)
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped or grated
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • For assembling the burgers:
    • 4 hamburger buns (sesame or plain)
    • Lettuce leaves (optional)
    • 4 slices American cheese (optional, or cheese of choice)
    • Sliced tomatoes
    • Pickles
    • Ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise (optional, for sauce)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the beef patties:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs (if using), chopped onions, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix gently until everything is well combined, being careful not to overwork the meat to avoid tough burgers.
    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty, about 1 inch thick. Make a small indent in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent the burger from puffing up while cooking.
  2. Cook the patties:

    • Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, add a little oil to prevent sticking.
    • Once the grill or skillet is hot, place the patties on it. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for well-done burgers (adjust the time if you prefer them more rare or medium).
    • If you're adding cheese, place a slice of cheese on each patty in the last minute of cooking to melt.

  1. Toast the buns:
    • While the burgers are cooking, slice the hamburger buns in half. Toast them lightly on the grill or in a separate pan until golden brown. This adds flavor and prevents the buns from becoming soggy when adding condiments.

  1. Assemble the burgers:

    • Spread your choice of condiments (ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise) on the bottom half of the toasted buns.
    • Place a cooked beef patty on top, followed by a slice of cheese, if using.
    • Add lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles to taste.
    • Top with the other half of the toasted bun.
  2. Serve:

    • Serve immediately with your favorite sides, such as French fries, coleslaw, or a side salad.
