Classic American Beef Burger Recipe
Ingredients (for 4 burgers):
- For the beef patties:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat for juiciness)
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for binding)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped or grated
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- For assembling the burgers:
- 4 hamburger buns (sesame or plain)
- Lettuce leaves (optional)
- 4 slices American cheese (optional, or cheese of choice)
- Sliced tomatoes
- Pickles
- Ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise (optional, for sauce)
Instructions:
Prepare the beef patties:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs (if using), chopped onions, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently until everything is well combined, being careful not to overwork the meat to avoid tough burgers.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty, about 1 inch thick. Make a small indent in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent the burger from puffing up while cooking.
Cook the patties:
- Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, add a little oil to prevent sticking.
- Once the grill or skillet is hot, place the patties on it. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for well-done burgers (adjust the time if you prefer them more rare or medium).
- If you're adding cheese, place a slice of cheese on each patty in the last minute of cooking to melt.
- Toast the buns:
- While the burgers are cooking, slice the hamburger buns in half. Toast them lightly on the grill or in a separate pan until golden brown. This adds flavor and prevents the buns from becoming soggy when adding condiments.
Assemble the burgers:
- Spread your choice of condiments (ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise) on the bottom half of the toasted buns.
- Place a cooked beef patty on top, followed by a slice of cheese, if using.
- Add lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles to taste.
- Top with the other half of the toasted bun.
Serve:
- Serve immediately with your favorite sides, such as French fries, coleslaw, or a side salad.
