We picked up this song playing over the air waves ….

The Gambler, by Kenny Rogers.

Rogers was on a hot streak that included "Lucille" and "Love or Something Like It" when he recorded "The Gambler" on June 16, 1978. His producer, Larry Butler, was simultaneously producing Cash's Gone Girl album during that period, and he encouraged Cash to also record "The Gambler," which he did on July 6, 1978.

Lyrics:

You've got to know when to hold 'em,
know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away,
know when to run.
You never count your money
when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin'
when the dealin's done.

The gambler states that every situation can be played for better or worse. The trick is to recognize what is worth keeping, choose one's battles, and not dwell on losses. After he finishes talking, the gambler crushes the cigarette out, falls asleep, and passes away in the night, leaving the narrator to ponder his wisdom alone.
