A Rare Crystal on the Moon Contains Potential Rocket Fuel
Scientists have discovered a lunar crystal containing helium-3, a rare isotope that could be the key to clean nuclear fusion. The sample was brought to Earth during China’s 2020 mission, which collected 1.7 kg of lunar soil.
The mineral formed 1.2 billion years ago during volcanic activity. Its structure has helped scientists confirm that helium-3 could indeed accumulate in lunar rocks.
This isotope is an ideal fuel for fusion reactors, as it produces no radioactive waste. While helium-3 is extremely rare on Earth, the Moon could become its primary source in the future.
