From a branch to a shrub, and from a bush to the windowsill, leap, leap, leap. Beady eyes, full of mischief, peer through the window and into the room. Sparrow.
A curious jumper who is ready to flee at any thoughtless movement on my part, protected by a flock of chattering, businesslike smaller birds who resemble him.
I feed the city-dwelling birds every winter because I think that people will support them during their hard times.
The most regular "clients" of my feeder are sparrows. The recognisable flock is not far from our window.
in fact, they are right there, shouting, pressing, and selecting a treat from the loose snow as soon as you open it to let out the crumbs or bits of grease left over from your meal.
Moreover, birds sit on the branches like blown-up brown balloons when frost strikes. In order to better retain heat, they purposefully ruffle their feathers.
Because there is a plenty of food on the ground and they are not as concerned with winter, sparrows are far more shy and independent in the summer.
However, as soon as the first snow falls, I re-connect with the sparrows in the feeding trough outside our window.
