In 793 AD, the Vikings in long ships attacked a monastery on a island close to the coast of England and this marked the beginning of the Viking age in England. The monastery in question was burnt down and the monks were either eliminated or thrown into the ocean to drown or were taken as slaves.

From around 8th to the 11th century, Vikings raiders attacked villages and monasteries all over Europe. Due to their cleverness in sea navigation as a pirate and waterways attack know-how, the Vikings moved swiftly across ocean in their long ships and appeared suddenly along the coast areas.

The Vikings were fierce warriors and tribesmen who used spears, swords, axes and different forms of metallic made weapons to attack their enemies. For protection of themselves they use large shield and helmets to cover themselves from attacks. However, it is a mistaken belief that their helmets had horns.

**The Vikings were pirates and ship builders who build fast ships for raiding and wars. "Dragon ship" is a term used to refer to the Vikings' ship at times.

Vikings long ships could travel in long ship sail in shallow waterways which allows to travel up river and as well as across the sea. In a short attack, they could easily capture a ship off the beach. The Vikings could jump into enemy ship and start fighting and then make a quick retreat back to their ship or the beach area of the sea if they were chased or over powered by their enemies.
