"Oral habits are habits that children frequently acquire that may either temporarily or permanently be harmful to dental occlusion and to the supporting structures."Source

Some habits tend to be compulsive in nature and maybe a little bit be difficult to correct from children.

Classification of Oral Habit

1- Useful and Harmful Habits
Useful habits are considered norma and good for the occlusion and the orofacial structures in general such as: positioning of tongues, respiration, normal deglutition.

On the other hand, harmful habits are the ones that can lead to malocclusion and bad look of orofacial structures which include: thumb sucking, tongue thrusting.

2- Pressure and non- pressure and biting
Pressure habits are the ones that involve the mounting of force on the oral tissues and the non pressure has nothing to do direct touch by force.
Such habits include lip sucking, nail biting, thrusting out of the tongue etc.

3- Compulsive and non-compulsive
"Oral habits of compulsion are repeated movements involving the mouth. The movements are caused by: lip biting, lip licking, lip sucking, tongue thrusting and thumb of finger sucking. The repeated forces caused by these habits move teeth and bone."Source

"Non-Compulsive Oral Habits: Are the ones that are easily added or dropped from the child's behaviour pattern as he matures"Source

4- Empty and Meaningful habits
Empty habits are useless habits and child's play that does not posses deep rooted psychological patterns.
Meaningful habits on the other hand are habits have psychological patterns and relationships.

i- Thumb sucking
ii- Infantile swallow
iii- Tongue thrusting
iv- Nail biting
