"Place value is the value of each digit in a number. For example, the 5 in 350 represents 5 tens, or 50; however, the 5 in 5,006 represents 5 thousands, or 5,000. It is important that children understand that while a digit can be the same, its value depends on where it is in the number."Source

A place value is the position of a number in relation to other numbers or digits for a particular numerical expression.

Take for instance, this number 435.786
If you were asked to find the place value of 5 in this figure, how do you find it ?.

It is very simple and easy. Just try to compose the figure as a whole into its constituents and then group each of the figures into their basic units for good identification and understanding.

Now, 435.786 as a question looking for the place value of 5

400+30+5.1/10(7)+ 1)100(8)+1/1000(6)....

Owing to the fact that 5 is the last number before the decimal point, therefore its place value is in ones(unit) or so.

Another example, 5.9, find the place value of 9.
Solving from the above example, the place value of 9 is tenths which is a single portion of a thing after diving the other single

In a nutshell, a place can be any of the following numerical positions or units;
Thousand, hundred, tens, ones(unit) and then proceed to the area after the decimal point which is tenths, hundredths, thousandths and so on
