"In orthodontics, a malocclusion is an misalignment or incorrect relation between the teeth of the upper and lower dental arches when they approach each other as the jaws close. The English-language term dates from 1864;Edward Angle (1855–1930), the "father of modern orthodontics",popularised it. The word derives from mal- 'incorrect' and occlusion 'the manner in which opposing teeth meet"Source
Classification of malocclusion is based on the relationship of the mesiobuccal cusp of the upper 6 tooth on either left or right side and the buccal groove of the lower 6. If this molar interaction sets in, then the teeth can go into normal occlusion.
According to Angle, malocclusion occurs when the available occlusion is deviated from the ideal and normal one. However, analysing malocclusion should consider aesthetics and functions such as mastication and speech.
If these conditions are manageable and can be tolerable to the patient despite meeting the formal definition of malocclusion, in this case the treatment may be ignored. A rough estimate from previous researches pointed that nearly 30% of the population have severe malocclusions and actually gained from orthodontic intervention and treatment.
Causes of Malocclusion
The main reason behind the etiology of malocclusion is somewhat multifaceted and contentious or in simply terms it is multifactorial, though it is usually circulated between both genetic and environmental.
"Malocclusion is already present in one of the Skhul and Qafzeh hominin fossils and other prehistoric human skulls."Source
In a nutshell, there are like three generally accepted malocclusion causing factors and contributors which are as follows:
1- Skeletal factors
2- Dental factors
3- Muscle factors
