Lagos to Resume Monthly Environmental Sanitation after 7 years off the Practice

GOVERNOR of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday, flagged off re-implementation of the monthly sanitation of environment exercise in the state, nearly seven years after the campaign was called off.

Reason previous administration gave was that, Lagos as a megacity, would no longer be appropriate to restrict movement for three hours.

Ayorinde one of the previous administration commissioner on information was reported to have said the government agreed to the cancellation of the exercise in order to arrive at a comprehensive check of environmental procedures in Lagos and finding a way to align it with the present challenges and also to pave way to enhance a clean and healthy surroundings across the state.

Ayorinde further proceeded by saying as quoted; “But sadly, the environmental laws, policies and procedures being practiced in the State have not been able to match the phenomenal growth and the dream of a 24-hour economy, hence the need for the reform.”Source

The cancellation of the exercise was in wake of a pronouncement by Lagos Appeal Court, which put a halt to monthly environmental sanitation in the state.

However the current governor of Lagos state, Sanwo-Olu launched the re-introduction of exercise on Sunday at a session in Lagos Island.

He also called for joint cooperation of Lagos residents and other stakeholders in making the exercise a successful one.
