Water can reviewed literally as the source of life and without it, there is no complete life activities.

The human body compose of 70 percent water.
So it is crucial to look at this topic to safeguard public health.

SAFE WATER is one that is free from pathogenic organisms, harmful chemical substances, excessive amount of minerals which could produce undesirable physiological effect.

It is essential to drink good safe water to prevent certain diseses

DAILY REQUIREMENT FOR DRINKING PURPOSE.

Average daily consumption for drinking water varies in view of variations in climate, temperature and physical activity.
On an average, two litres of water is required per adult person for drinking purpose alone, and child requires one litre per day.

We should ensure water is clean and safe for consumption.

Water can be clean and not safe as it may contain some pathogens, sulphur etc.

We should care about health and not just the appearance of water.

Knowing the distinction between actually safe and merely clean water can make the difference between life or death for a child under five, likewise between improved health or expensive medical payments for a family or group of families. In simple terms, between surviving and thriving for nation

Providing clean supplies of water and ensuring proper sanitation facilities can save millions of lives by reducing the prevalence of water - related disease.

When water is been contaminated by human, animal and chemical wastes it leads to "Water borne diseases".
Which include the following; cholera, typhoid, dysentery, polio, hepatitis A and E. Etc.

Sources of water

There are various sources of water such as Ground water (e.g well),surface water (e g rivers, lakes, ponds etc)and rain water.

How do we purify them?

Water purification.
Water can be made safe and potable through time tested technologies and Natural process to diminish organic and inorganic suspended particles.

Natural method of water purification
Dilution and sedimentation

Dilution: Controlling pollution by dilution is a natural way in rivers and stream water.

Small amount of sewage or polluting matter gets diluted so much that it loses its bad effect on human health.

We should ensure our waste is handled carefully so as not to get diluted with our water.

Sedimentation
If water is allowed to stand or stored in a reservoir or tank ,it is exposed to natural sunlight and air which leads to aeration and adds oxygen to water oxidizes organic matter to a large extent.

If water is allowed to stand in reservoir for 24hours or longer, it allowed suspended organic matter and inorganic settles down at the bottom.

This is the common method used in water purification for pipe borne water.

When we leave our water for 24hrs before drinking is a form of water purification because it would have free from impurities by obeying the law of gravity which make the impurities to settle down.

NOTE: Over the period after sedimentation, sludge accumulates at the bottom of the tank which have to be removed periodically.

Don't forget to wash your tank for your water to fit for consumption.

Purification by Artificial means.
This include: Filtration

Disinfection of water by:
i- Boiling.
ii- Ozone.
iii- Ultraviolet Rays.

Do we know that boiling is the best method of water purification?

When you purify your water by boiling, definitely it will reach 100 degree Celsius by then all the pathogens that may be present would have been dead.

And this can be achieved at home by individual.

Chemical method:
Yes chemical method
You see this chemical method of water purification.

It is not really assuring if all the water packaging companies and dealers do practice before distributing out water for selling. Everything is not really dependent.

However, chlorine a halogen in the group 7 of the periodic table has been the mainstay of disinfection of water and is the most commonly used disinfectant worldwide.

Best action of chlorine can is achieved when pH is around 7.0.

Do you always check the ph of your well before applying chlorine Abi you're just been told to purify your water with chlorine ?

Well chlorination deserves special attention.

In conclusion, let's always ensure our water is clean and safe for consumption to free from water borne diseases.

Health is wealth.
Prevention is always better and appropriate that cure.
