Raveena Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said this at a briefing in Geneva. The spokesperson said the United Nations will deploy a fact-finding team to Bangladesh next week to analyze the root causes of human rights violations and abuses of power during the protests and make recommendations for justice and accountability and long-term reforms. The team received commitments from the interim government and the security forces for full cooperation in this work. The briefing said that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has declared Bangladesh's accession to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance and a five-member national mandate to trace persons who have been forcibly disappeared by law enforcement agencies. It added that Bangladesh has a long and painful history of enforced disappearances, which is closely monitored by the UN Human Rights Office and the UN Human Rights Mechanism. It has been reported that the UN commission is ready to help in this regard. The United Nations believes that the search for missing persons must be carried out in close consultation with the victims and their families in accordance with international human rights standards. The UN special team also met with people detained or injured in the protests, including advisers to the interim government, the chief justice, senior police and armed forces officials, lawyers, journalists and human rights activists, representatives of political parties, and minority and indigenous communities.
