Museums: spaces to learn about our past and understand the present

Museums are fabulous places, they allow us to learn about everything we are culturally, historically, socially and even about human behavior. I live in a city that was declared historical and cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 1993, it has a historic center whose architectural value makes it a true jewel of the colony.

I really like history and culture, for me learning about our ancestors is a way to create awareness of what we were and are in the present, in addition to this, it provides us with a memory and community identity. That is why museums are one of my favorite places to take children, whether they are family or friends who come to visit us.

Our visit begins in the historic center of the city where we find the museums and old houses that make up the heritage of our town and the whole world. This has some streets covered in stone, which historians say have nothing to do with the period in which the houses were built, however, for reasons of ambience and because they can not have dirt streets in the historic center were covered with stones.

The museums and sites of historical interest keep in themselves impressive stories, the houses were connected to each other through subway tunnels through which in the independence period the persecuted managed to escape. Others say that these tunnels were used to smuggle slaves (a very cruel story indeed). The houses were built in 1577 and its construction has been kept completely handmade with blocks of mud and stone. In two streets are distributed 5 museums, one per house, plus a bookstore, cafes and colonial churches.

In these museums, children and adults have learned about the customs and traditions, the legacy of our ancestors and in my personal case, I like that children realize what life was like when there was no technology, because there you find objects from the colonial era and some of the house museums are even preserved with the rooms as they were left by their last owners.

Among the attractions, apart from the tunnels, are the objects that belong to the sacred art, where the objects used by the Catholic priests to officiate the ceremonies are exposed, as well as to evangelize the Indians. There is even a statuette of a Virgin Mary who is dark brown and has a wig with straight hair, which, according to our guide, was placed by the priests when the ceremony was for the Indians and was removed leaving the image with curly hair and very short when it came to African slaves.

Many of these houses have passed from generation to generation and each one tells a story through its objects, in addition to feeling a story on its walls. As I said I am a fan of history and culture and in these houses you can see how society needed to evolve, especially on the issue of human rights, these houses are an opportunity to teach children what was once seen as correct but in reality is not, such as the issue of slaves. Besides, there is the knowledge of the gastronomy and the cultural mix that we are in my country and in Latin America. Thank you for your attention and every time you go on a trip or in your city take your children to visit the museums.
