Recently in a supermarket I met an old acquaintance, who greeted me with much affection and nostalgia at the same time. She told me that just recently she had decided to go out again to the street, to the outside world, after a decade away from everyone and everything locked up at home, she confessed to me that it was not easy, that she needed a lot of support and therapy, but thanks to something inside her that kept her with will and strength to live, she managed to get ahead.

Maybe because of the time without contact with the outside world she saw everything as new or transformed, the truth is that everything evolves and changes without realizing it. She told me that after the unexpected death of her partner, she could not stop being sad, she only cried and felt lonely, disappointed and even abandoned, she clung to the memories, to every thing, object or belonging that reminded her of her loved one. This woman had decided to live on memories anchored to the past and that is why she isolated herself, because the more the days went by she realized that everything began to become very distant.

"Living on memories," she would tell me, "I had decided to live on memories, on our memories, on her memory, I didn't want anything else." However, a few years passed and she began to miss out on good and new moments with family and friends who were drifting away from her in the face of her refusals to go out and continue living. She found herself in her bubble and it was pandemic when the death of other loved ones sent her into a shock reaction. It was when she realized her mistake, how she let the years go by without collecting new memories, those that came from good times in places with loved ones and people, enjoying the life she still had.

Her awakening to the world, again, was neither late nor early, it just was. I am one of those people who think that we should all respect the processes of each person, however, we must understand that life is a constant change and transformation, that clinging to the past hurts us, remembering is living, they say, but remembering is making each new day worthwhile in our existence, that at the end of the years we can have a beautiful diary of memories that bring joy to our lives and allow us to move forward. May memories be wings and not chains, I once read and that phrase made me think that, yes we should treasure every moment, but not live in memories.
