I recently got two guinea pigs in my house. They are sweet and affectionate creatures that can make wonderful companions. But it should be remembered that they are quite delicate creatures and their care requires responsibility and dedication. The most basic rules are

Housing:

We all appreciate comfort and coziness. And our pets, too. Therefore, before bringing the guinea pig home, you should take care of a comfortable place for your new friend.

There are dozens of cells of different sizes in pet stores. Which one will be suitable for a guinea pig? There are simple rules that can make the choice easier. So.

You’ll need a spacious cage or hutch (minimum 7.5 square feet for one guinea pig, more for multiples). Avoid cages with wire bottoms as they can hurt their feet.
Provide plenty of bedding made from safe materials like paper-based bedding, fleece, or aspen shavings. Avoid cedar and pine shavings as they can be harmful.
Include hiding places, tunnels, and platforms for enrichment and security.
Keep the cage clean by spot-cleaning daily and doing a full clean weekly.

Diet:

Guinea pigs are herbivores and need a diet high in fiber. Their primary food should be unlimited high-quality grass hay (Timothy hay is a good option).

Supplement their diet with fresh vegetables daily (bell peppers, carrots, leafy greens). Introduce new veggies slowly to avoid digestive upset.
Provide a small amount of guinea pig pellets daily, but don't make them the main source of food.

Ensure they have access to fresh, clean water at all times from a bottle or a heavy ceramic dish.

Environment:

Guinea pigs are sensitive to temperature and drafts. Keep them in a room with a temperature between 65-79°F and avoid direct sunlight.

Offer them daily playtime outside their cage in a safe, predator-proof area. Supervise them closely during playtime.
Handle them gently and support their bodies when picking them up. Avoid sudden movements.

Guinea pigs are social creatures and do better with a companion. However, make sure to introduce them properly to avoid fighting.

Veterinary Care:

Take your guinea pig to a vet experienced with exotic pets for regular checkups and any health concerns.
Watch for signs of illness like changes in eating, drinking, or behavior, and seek veterinary attention promptly.

By following these simple rules, you will be able to ensure your guinea pig a healthy and happy life.
