Due to the country's economic problems and skyrocketing food prices, many Nigerians are finding it difficult to afford food. Protesters in the southwest city of Ibadan were incensed with the direction taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The demonstrators blocked a road and shouted while being watched over by armed police and soldiers. Fuel prices tripled and living expenses increased as a result of Tinubu's removal of currency controls and fuel subsidies after taking government last year. The naira also depreciated against the dollar.
Although the 71-year-old leader has urged patience for his changes to take hold and that they will help draw in foreign investment, Nigerians have taken a hard line to the policies. In January, Nigeria's inflation rate was close to 30%.
Many underprivileged Nigerians have been forced to give up luxury items like milk, eggs, and meat. Numerous places have witnessed protests due to the harsh conditions.
Social media videos demonstrate that some women have even gone so far as to excavate anthills in search of grain that the insects had stored for their children's sustenance.
The powerful Kano traditional emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, issued a dire warning earlier this month, stating that Nigerians were facing "economic hardships, hunger and starvation," and he urged the president to act immediately. Things are becoming unmanageable.
