Heliculture, is the method or practice of growing snails. It entails cultivating land snails for human nourishment or utilizing the shell of the snail for a variety of customary and domestic uses. They are hermaphrodites, meaning they lack a distinct male and female. When I was younger, I used to believe that one kind of snail was the male and another type was the female. Little did I know that all snails were the same species; they were only different in appearance.
Every species of snail contains both a male and a female reproductive apparatus, but before a snail can lay eggs, it must marry with another member of the same species. In some seasons, a specific snail may behave as a male this season and as a female the next, and vice versa.
It is interesting to note that snails may keep sperm cells for up to a year and deposit eggs in a matter of weeks, despite spending several hours courting after they may have developed, which takes several years. The conditions in which they lay their eggs, including as the soil's temperature, moisture content, composition, and hardness, all have a significant impact.
Dry soils are unsuitable for raising snails; a snail needs one to two days to lay 30 to 50 eggs.
Things To Take Into Account When Farming Snails
Climate: Significantly chilly, reasonably humid settings are preferred by snails. Because snails need to hold onto their moisture, wind is bad for them because it increases moisture loss.
Moisture: An environment's moisture level should be maintained at about 80% since moisture snails prefer damp, but not soggy, conditions.
Soils: They even consume the particles of this soft, moist soil because it is where they thrive. Rich and healthy soils encourage their growth because they are full of nutrients.
The soil's pH has to be neutral. That is, the pH must be approximately 7. Any lower or higher than this will make the soil acidic, which is bad for the snail's health, and any higher than this will make the soil basic, which is also bad for the snail's health. They also need to live on calcium-rich soils.
While grown snails can eat other juicy leaves including those from barley, carrots, cabbage, pumpkins, and pawpaw leaves, baby snails can only eat lettuce leaves.
Insects and Diseases: In addition to keeping infections from spreading and contaminating the snails, a clean environment promotes the snails' growth and general health.
The Economic Significance of Snails
Protein-rich snails can be cooked in a variety of ways to create a variety of delicious dishes. Some people even like their snails fried with pepper. Snails can be boiled or roasted.
Snail shells have traditional or household uses, such as the production of traditional remedies and scrubbing powder for cleaning and washing kitchenware and other items.
Creams for skin treatment and face cleansers are made with snail liquid extract.
