Hace unas semanas terminé una mantita a crochet. Sé que estamos en pleno verano y quizás no era el mejor momento para tejer algo tan abrigador, pero cuando me dan ganas de hacer un proyecto, simplemente lo hago sin importar la estación. Desde hace tiempo quería una manta cómoda y esponjosa para el invierno, de esas que te envuelven como un abrazo, y encontré la excusa perfecta para ponerme a tejer.
A few weeks ago, I finished crocheting a little blanket. I know we’re in the middle of summer and maybe it wasn’t the best time to make something so cozy, but when I feel like starting a project, I just do it—regardless of the season. I had been wanting a comfortable and fluffy blanket for the winter, one of those that wraps you up like a hug, and I found the perfect excuse to start crocheting.
La elección de la lana y el diseño
Para este proyecto elegí una de mis lanas favoritas: revesderecho. Me encanta esta marca porque su lana bulky acrílica es de excelente calidad, súper suave y con una textura muy agradable. Además, al ser gruesa, permite que los tejidos avancen rápido, lo cual siempre es un punto a favor cuando se trata de mantas.
Me decidí por un diseño sencillo pero con un punto que le diera textura y volumen. A veces me gusta probar puntos nuevos o hacer combinaciones de colores, pero esta vez opté por un tono neutro y un punto fácil de repetir. Usé una aguja gruesa, lo que hizo que la manta creciera bastante rápido, y eso es algo que siempre disfruto cuando trabajo con este tipo de lana.
Uno de los motivos por los que me gusta tejer mantas es que son proyectos relajantes. A diferencia de prendas como suéteres o chalecos, donde hay que preocuparse por tallas y formas, con las mantas solo necesitas un tamaño aproximado y luego puedes tejer sin tanta preocupación. Es el tipo de proyecto perfecto para hacer mientras ves una serie o escuchas música, dejando que las manos trabajen casi automáticamente.
La idea era que esta manta fuera para mí. Ya me imaginaba usándola en las noches frías de invierno, envuelta con una taza de té caliente en la mano. Pero al final… mi mamá terminó comprándomela.
Desde que empecé a tejerla, ella la miraba con curiosidad. Pasaba por el lugar donde estaba tejiendo y hacía comentarios como: "Ese color está bonito", "Se ve bien suavecita". Cuando la terminé, en lugar de llevársela sin preguntar (como podría haber pasado en otras circunstancias), me dijo directamente: "Véndemela".
Al principio me reí, pero la verdad es que los materiales de tejido no son baratos, y ella lo sabe bien. Así que le dije que sí, pero solo le cobré la mitad del valor real. No podía venderle algo hecho con mis propias manos a precio completo, pero tampoco iba a regalarlo, porque el hilo bulky de buena calidad como el de revesderecho tiene su costo.
Choosing the Yarn and the Design
For this project, I chose one of my favorite yarns: revesderecho. I love this brand because its bulky acrylic yarn is of excellent quality, super soft, and has a very pleasant texture. Additionally, since it’s thick, it allows the project to progress quickly, which is always a plus when making blankets.
I went for a simple design but with a stitch that gave it texture and volume. Sometimes I like to try new stitches or mix colors, but this time I chose a neutral tone and an easy-to-repeat stitch. I used a thick hook, which made the blanket grow quite fast, and that’s something I always enjoy when working with this kind of yarn.
One of the reasons I enjoy crocheting blankets is that they are relaxing projects. Unlike garments like sweaters or vests, where you have to worry about sizes and shapes, with blankets, you only need an approximate size, and then you can just crochet without too much worry. It’s the perfect kind of project to do while watching a show or listening to music, letting your hands work almost automatically.
The idea was for this blanket to be for me. I already imagined using it on cold winter nights, wrapped up with a hot cup of tea in my hand. But in the end… my mom ended up buying it from me.
Since I started crocheting it, she had been eyeing it curiously. She would pass by where I was crocheting and make comments like: "That color is nice," "It looks really soft." When I finished it, instead of just taking it without asking (as could have happened in other circumstances), she directly said to me: "Sell it to me."
At first, I laughed, but the truth is that crochet materials aren’t cheap, and she knows that well. So I said yes, but I only charged her half the actual price. I couldn’t sell her something made with my own hands at full price, but I wasn’t going to give it away either because good-quality bulky yarn like revesderecho does come at a cost.
Al final, ambas quedamos contentas. Ella obtuvo su manta esponjosa y yo recuperé parte de lo invertido en los materiales, lo cual siempre viene bien cuando se trata de seguir tejiendo más proyectos.
Una de las cosas que más me gustó de este proyecto fue que lo hice sin apurarme, disfrutando cada fila, sin preocuparme demasiado por la perfección. A veces sigo patrones estrictos, pero esta vez simplemente dejé que el tejido fluyera. Y creo que por eso quedó tan bien, porque no solo tejí una manta, sino también un montón de momentos tranquilos y agradables.
Muchas veces nos obsesionamos con que todo quede perfecto, con seguir cada indicación al pie de la letra, pero hay algo especial en dejarse llevar por el tejido y simplemente disfrutarlo. En este caso, cada puntada fue hecha con calma, sin presión, y creo que eso se reflejó en el resultado final.
Ahora, cada vez que veo a mi mamá envuelta en la manta, pienso en todo el proceso y me da gusto saber que terminó en el lugar correcto. Aunque no era el plan original, creo que no pudo haber tenido un mejor destino.
Y bueno, parece que tendré que empezar otra para mí… si es que esta vez logro quedármela.
In the end, we were both happy. She got her fluffy blanket, and I recovered part of what I spent on the materials, which always comes in handy when planning more crochet projects.
One of the things I loved most about this project was that I did it without rushing, enjoying every row without worrying too much about perfection. Sometimes I follow strict patterns, but this time I simply let the crochet flow. And I think that’s why it turned out so well, because I didn’t just crochet a blanket, I also stitched in a bunch of peaceful and pleasant moments.
Often, we get obsessed with making everything perfect, following every instruction to the letter, but there’s something special about just letting go and enjoying the process. In this case, every stitch was made calmly, without pressure, and I think that was reflected in the final result.
Now, every time I see my mom wrapped up in the blanket, I think about the whole process, and it makes me happy to know that it ended up in the right place. Even though that wasn’t the original plan, I don’t think it could have had a better destination.
And well, it looks like I’ll have to start another one for myself… if I can manage to keep it this time.
