7 Cases When It Is Better To Remain Silent

Be quiet. Listen. Wait.

Have you ever felt like you talked too much? Sometimes we all end up saying things we didn't mean to say. It might be a joke that ruins the moment or a careless comment. Sometimes, the best thing to do to avoid trouble is to just... keep quiet.

There are times when it's better to just listen quietly. That way, you can notice people's gestures and emotions.

Silence can be helpful, especially in these 7 situations:

1. When People Gossip

People like to gossip, but it's not nice to talk about others. When someone starts gossiping about your friends or colleague , don't say anything. Just listen. You'll learn a lot about the speaker and the person being talked about.

If you're asked for your opinion about the person being criticized, stay silent or say something like, “I think he/she is doing the best they can.” It might feel awkward, but you'll feel better later.

2. When Asked About Your Personal Life

Questions like “How was your date yesterday?” or “How is your sex life?” can be uncomfortable. It's best to keep your answers unclear. You wouldn't want someone to answer such personal questions about you, and being too open might make you seem untrustworthy.

3. After An Obvious Mistake

When someone messes up, it's best not to comment. People can be hurtful or make false allegation when they're upset. Don't point out the mistake or try to make them feel bad. You might come across as arrogant.

4. When You Understand A Question Well

It's great to succeed, but show off isn't cool. Only talk about your experience and knowledge when it's relevant. For example, when having lunch with family and friends, focus on enjoying the time together. Save talk about your achievements for appropriate settings, like work or meetings with your boss.

5. When You Know A Secret That Could Help You

If you know something that could benefit you but harm someone else, it's best to keep quiet. Saying something might make you seem untrustworthy in the long run.

6. When You Don't Understand What Others Are Saying

It's okay not to understand sometimes. Admitting that you're lost in a conversation is better than saying something wrong or negative.

7. During An Argument

When people argue, they often say things they regret later. If you're upset, stay silent. Even if you're right, it's better to wait until things calm down. The other person might not be ready to listen at that moment. Holding back might be hard at first, but with time, you'll get better at it.
