Deliverance from addiction is a lifelong process of change triggered by the willingness to admit that one has a problem. Alcohol, food, pornography, gambling, work, hard drugs, and other vices enslave the mind, soul, and body and remove potential, family, and hope. However, it must be understood that addiction is not an iron wall that a recovering person cannot overcome; it can be broken if only the individual has the will, companionship, and methods.
The first one is understanding that addiction feeds on isolation and the persons affected do not disclose this information to others. It should be noted that seeking help is not a weakness but it is a strength, that stems from strength of character. An individual is better placed to recover when he or she has friends, family, or professional counselors in place. Moreover, it is crucial to seek the underlying causes of addiction, which could be trauma, stress, or feelings of loneliness, among others, to prevent a relapse.
Addiction can be broken when negative behaviors are replaced by positive ones. Even physical activity, practicing mindfulness, and creative work can help to take its place, to bring satisfaction into the person’s life. This is also true for patience; it is always said that it’s a journey not a destination when it comes to recovery.
Each action made towards fighting the disease is a step toward regaining the power, dignity, and hope for the better tomorrow. You are more than your addiction, you are a survivor. To cut the chains is in your hands and it starts one step and one day at a time.
