Young Woman and the Sea

Let's go back to a time of gender inequality and social restrictions on women. Since we don't have a time machine, we will of course do it through the magical light and reflection of cinema.

I'm talking about an impressive elephant based on a true life story. Adapted by Walt Disney Studios, the movie is about the journey of Gertrude Ederle (Trudy), the first woman in history to swim across the Atlantic Ocean, who inspired all women and reduced the pressure of social constraints.

Despite all the obstacles and difficulties, to describe such an achievement as extraordinary and to see it as a legend in the world of sports, I think, is to give credit where credit is due. Anyway, let's not get away from the movie, let's focus on the moment of success, not the aftermath.

Young Woman and the Sea

Gertrude Ederle (played by Daisy Ridley) is a strong character who pushes her physical and mental limits, struggling both within herself and against the limits imposed by society.

The film begins with the character's struggle for life before focusing on his success in swimming. At a moment when doctors give her time to die, she first fights her illness and wins.

Her stubbornness, determination and determination to follow her dreams are perfectly portrayed from the time she is a baby to the moment she achieves success in a world and sport dominated by men.

When the risks taken are compared to the fatal consequences, the value of the achievement increases, but I can safely say that Trudy's success is an inspiration to all women and a determinant and influencer of the improved rights of women in today's world.

One of the most important reflections of the movie may be about where we have come from in terms of gender inequality, but I am sure that such a questioning will make the character's achievement and the path she paves for the future more valuable.

I can say that Young Woman and the Sea was also visually rich. Especially the ocean scenes, underwater images, wide seascapes and swimming images during the moments of success draw the audience into the journey.

The costume and production designs that successfully reflect the period also contributed to the atmosphere of the movie. I think the music used is effective in reflecting Trudy's inner world.

To see the movie only as a sports biography would be to ignore the gender inequality and social pressures that Trudy fought against, because the success she achieved is based on standing up against the injustices of the time and achieving the impossible with the motivation provided.

I highly recommend you to watch the movie. Thank you for being here and reading, take care, goodbye!
