Released in 2023, Coup! is presented as a thriller-comedy, but I think the mystery aspect of the movie stands out the most. Set in 1918, when the Spanish flu gave the world a nightmare, the story centers on an extremely humane and loving family.
The family isolates themselves against the disease in the mansion they own with their employees and tries to get through this process as smoothly as possible, but with the arrival of their newly hired cook; they are dragged into an adventure full of contradictions.
The story gains momentum as the character traits of the movie are successfully reflected. Thanks to the mystery that makes its presence felt in the story from the very beginning of the movie, it becomes impossible to predict the next scene and you don't know where the movie will end up. This gives the audience incredible viewing pleasure.
If I were to give a single clue, it wasn't until the last moments of the movie that I realized that this was actually a revenge story. I can say that the screenwriter and the director had a lot to do with this. The mystery is not sprinkled throughout the story, it is used as much as possible and it is very much in harmony with the story of the movie.
Billy Magnussen, who plays the character of Jay Horton, who leads his family and all his employees to an isolated life in the mansion on the island, was excellent in his acting performance from the moment he transformed from a vegetarian and harmless to any living creature to a killer. Watching the character's transitions and his personal story during these transitions were the most enjoyable moments of the movie.
Peter Sarsgaard, as Floyd Monk, a newcomer to the isolated environment who becomes the focal point from the moment he joins, steers the movie with the mystery of his own story. While the character single-handedly steered the movie, his annoying appearance and actions were unbearable at times.
I can say that the story of Coup! is quite different, but I'll keep quiet about what exactly the differences are. After watching the movie, when I look at the big picture, I can see that several movies can be made out of one movie. However, when watching the movie, the whole story is presented as a single whole.
The costumes and the atmosphere created in the story were extremely mesmerizing. I can say that the movie brought to life the times in which the story takes place. In terms of the tasks they undertake in the mansion, individual characteristics were added to each character and each character was very effective in reflecting themselves.
The best scenes of the movie were the moments when the two prominent characters showed their strength. The way they try to outmaneuver each other is definitely worth seeing. You can tell that they are very adept at manipulation by their ability to influence the other characters.
You should definitely watch the movie Coup! I'm sure it will stick in my mind as one of the productions that contains more than one story and handles them meticulously by combining them. Again, I really liked the way the mystery genre was handled in the movie.
