Today marked a rather contemplative day for me, where I found myself engrossed in deep thought rather than engaging in many activities. As the clock ticks away, I am confronted with the reality that my time in Kenya is drawing to a close. My visa is running out soon, necessitating a move to a different country. Initially, Uganda was my next destination, but unforeseen challenges have forced me to reconsider.
The primary deterrent is the significant spike in Uganda's visa fees, soaring to around $100. Coupled with the elevated cost of bus transportation from the coast, this financial strain has led me to defer my plans for Uganda, at least for the time being. Faced with budgetary constraints, I am compelled to revisit Tanzania, a country I explored and enjoyed just a year ago. It's an unexpected return, but circumstances dictate my choices.
In the upcoming days, my focus will be on navigating the visa requirements for Tanzania, completing the application process, and, hopefully, indulging in some beach time. The irony of residing so close to the ocean yet rarely immersing myself in its waters weighs on me. Hence, my resolution to seize the remaining days and savor a few more moments by the seaside.
However, there is an underlying apprehension accompanying the prospect of crossing into Tanzania. Recalling my last border crossing, I was unjustly detained by Kenyan Border Police, falsely accused of being an illegal immigrant. Their motive was clear – extracting money from me. This time around, the situation is different as my embassy is already involved, actively addressing the previous incident. I remain cautiously optimistic that this encounter will be more amicable. Perhaps, this time, the border officials will not be adversaries. I can only hope for a smoother experience and, if I'm fortunate, maybe even a complimentary dinner and coffee.
Researching the current prices and conditions in Tanzania online, I've discovered that the landscape has changed considerably since my last visit. Many accommodations I frequented no longer exist, prompting me to seek out new, budget-friendly alternatives. Despite my reluctance to delve into the logistical aspects of this transition, I recognize it as a task that demands attention this week.
Amidst the planning and uncertainties, I am determined to relish my final days on the Kenyan Coast, embracing the beauty of the surroundings and creating lasting memories before embarking on the next leg of my journey.
