After a lengthy stroll through the Klis fortress, we returned to the gate just in the nick of time. The COVID lockdown had just begun, so their operating hours were limited.
We snapped a few more photos in front of the gate before heading into town to locate a bus station and check the departure time for the next bus to Split.
At the bus stop, we discovered that there was nearly a two-hour wait for the next bus. So, we decided to visit the café we had noticed earlier. Inside the café, which was empty except for us, each of us placed an order and savored the moment. Suddenly, a bus went by. Hastily gathering our belongings, we left money on the table and rushed to the bus stop, only to find no bus in sight.
A tricky situation arose – the lone bus available was an hour ahead of schedule. After scanning the area, someone pointed out that the bus was on the other side of the building. We made our way there, inquired with the bus driver about the route to Split, and received a positive response. Just as we were about to board, the driver informed us he was on his break; we were to wait at the bus stop until his scheduled return.
Unbelievably, we had left everything behind at the café, even our half-finished drinks, only to learn that the bus was waiting for another hour. We retraced our steps to the café, hoping the table hadn't been cleared yet. Unfortunately, it had been tidied up, so we headed back to the bus stop and patiently waited for the driver.
The wait felt endless, but finally, the bus arrived. We paid the fare, boarded the bus, and set off for Split. During the journey, we were the sole passengers. However, before reaching the center of Split, the driver unexpectedly halted at the main road and instructed us to disembark, stating that he wouldn't be heading to the center that day.
We alighted and made our way back to the Hostel in the Diocletian Palace. Despite the scorching sun, it had been an eventful and historic day – from a Roman Amphitheatre to church ruins and an ancient graveyard, then on to the birthplace of Roman Emperor Diocletian, Salona, and eventually the Klis fortress via taxi. A day filled with remarkable experiences during the COVID era.
We expressed our gratitude for the incredible day; undoubtedly, it had been a memorable one.
