This morning, around 6:15 a.m., after dropping my son off at school, I decided to visit Khao Nak Kerd, the highest mountain in Phuket. This majestic peak is home to Wat Phra Phuttha Mingmongkol Aeknakkiri, commonly known to tourists as Wat Phra Yai. I hadn't been to Wat Phra Yai in many months, and today, I was eager to watch the sunrise from this serene location.

The drive took me about 30 minutes, and with no traffic on the roads, I was able to maintain a good speed. As I ascended the steep road to Wat Phra Yai, I took extra care, mindful of the challenging terrain. The journey was made pleasant by the large, shady trees lining both sides of the road, creating a canopy of green.

Along the way, I passed several restaurants and elephant camps, adding a touch of local charm to the route. This road is also popular among runners who test their fitness on the uphill climb, which stretches approximately five kilometers.

When I arrived at the Big Buddha Temple, the sun had already risen high in the sky, casting a golden light that bathed the entire sea. Khao Nak Kerd, known as the highest and most beautiful viewpoint in Phuket, offered a breathtaking panorama. From this vantage point, I could see the entirety of Chalong District spread out below me. The sea stretched endlessly to the horizon, dotted with numerous yachts moored in Chalong Bay. The combination of the shimmering water, the anchored yachts, and the lush greenery created a mesmerizing scene, making the early morning journey truly unforgettable.

Many monkeys live freely in the mountains of Phuket, including on Nakkerd. While taking pictures, I noticed 2-3 monkeys casually walking along the fence. As I got closer, they quickly walked away. However, these monkeys can be quite bold when it comes to food. If you hold a bag with items, they will immediately jump and snatch it away.

I witnessed a female tourist carrying a plastic bag with snacks and water inside. Suddenly, a large monkey jumped in and grabbed the plastic bag from her without warning. This incident reminded me of the importance of not carrying plastic bags in areas where monkeys are present. The monkeys associate these bags with food and will fight over them, potentially causing harm to unsuspecting visitors.

Travelers should be cautious and avoid carrying plastic bags in such places to prevent any encounters with these opportunistic primates.

The highlight of Wat Phra Yai is the magnificent "Phra Phuttha Mingmongkol Akenakkiri," a stunning white Buddha image in the posture. This impressive structure is not only a spiritual symbol but also an architectural marvel, visible from almost anywhere in Phuket.

The Buddha image is constructed from reinforced concrete and adorned with gleaming white Burmese jade marble. The combination of its immense size and the delicate marble detailing makes it an outstandingly beautiful sight, drawing visitors from near and far to marvel at its serene and majestic presence.

In the morning, there weren't many tourists, and the weather was pleasantly cool. I took the opportunity to walk up the Naga stairs, which offered a breathtaking view when looking down. The peaceful atmosphere and the stunning scenery made the experience even more memorable.

The temple is home to many sacred statues, making it a place of deep spiritual significance. For those who appreciate quiet temples with breathtaking views, Wat Phra Yai is a must-visit destination.
