After 10 years of expatriate life in Thailand, I find myself in the hospital for the first time, ready to undergo surgery for a inguinal hernia (in other words, my intestines are trying to "escape" through the muscles of the abdomen LOL). It's actually my first surgery ever, not bad for a fifty-year-old, right? 😁

Ça y est, après 10 ans de vie d'expatrié en Thaïlande, me voilà pour la première fois à l'hôpital, prêt à subir une opération pour une hernie inguinale (en d'autres termes, mes intestins essaient de se faire la malle par les muscles de l'abdomen LOL). Toute première opération de ma vie d'ailleurs, pas mal pour un cinquantenaire, n'est-ce pas ? 😁

 
One lesson I draw from this experience: having expatriate health insurance is essential, as medical expenses in Thailand can quickly accumulate. As a French expatriate, there is no social security coverage, so the choices are limited to private insurance or the CFE.

The Caisse des Français de l'Étranger (CFE) is an organization of social security for French nationals living abroad. It is financially independent and is a private organization responsible for a public service. The CFE is governed by the Social Security Code and is supervised by the ministries in charge of social security and the budget. It covers all health expenses for expatriates over 30 years old living and working abroad and their dependents worldwide, including in France.

Une leçon que je tire de cette expérience : avoir une assurance santé expatrié est indispensable, car les frais médicaux en Thaïlande peuvent vite s'accumuler. En tant qu'expatrié français, pas de sécurité sociale pour prendre en charge, donc les choix se limitent à une assurance privée ou la CFE.
 
La Caisse des Français de l'Étranger (CFE) est une organisation de la sécurité sociale pour les ressortissants français vivant à l'étranger. Elle est financièrement autonome et est une organisation privée responsable d'un service public. La CFE est régie par le Code de la Sécurité Sociale et placée sous la supervision des ministères en charge de la sécurité sociale et du budget. Elle couvre tous les frais de santé des expatriés de plus de 30 ans qui vivent et travaillent à l'étranger et de leurs ayants droit partout dans le monde, y compris en France.

So, I got to experience the Thai healthcare system, which is known for its efficiency and robustness. It ranks 6th out of 195 countries according to the Global Health Security 2019 ranking. The overall quality of its medical facilities and the competence of its healthcare staff are widely recognized. The Thai government has invested heavily in medical technology, with a strategic plan for the period 2016-2025 aiming to make Thailand the leading medical hub in Asia in four areas: wellness, medical services, medical education, and medical products.

Du coup j'ai pu découvrir le système de santé Thailandais qui est reconnu pour son efficacité et sa robustesse. Il se classe 6e sur 195 pays selon le classement Global Health Security 2019. La qualité globale de ses équipements médicaux et la compétence de son personnel de santé sont largement reconnues. Le gouvernement thaïlandais a investi massivement dans la technologie médicale. Un plan stratégique a été voté pour la période 2016-2025, visant à faire de la Thaïlande le premier pôle médical d’Asie dans quatre domaines : le bien-être, les services médicaux, l’enseignement de la médecine et les produits médicaux.

 
I underwent surgery at Bangkok Hospital Siriroj, which is part of the largest hospital network in Thailand and is covered by my insurance. The hospital offers services in more than 30 medical and surgical specialties. It also houses the Phuket Institute of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, the largest in Southeast Asia.

The most fun part? It has a hyperbaric chamber, one of the first medical facilities to introduce such an installation in Thailand.

I must admit it's top-notch!

J'ai été opéré au Bangkok Hospital Siriroj qui fait partie plus grand réseau d’hôpitaux de Thaïlande et est couvert par mon assurance. L’hôpital offre des services dans plus de 30 spécialités médicales et chirurgicales. Il abrite également l’Institut de chirurgie plastique et esthétique de Phuket, le plus grand de l’Asie du Sud-Est.
 
Le plus fun? Il dispose d’une chambre hyperbare, l’une des premières installations médicales à introduire une telle installation en Thaïlande.
 
Je dois bien avouer qu'il est au top!

Since we are in the land of smiles, it's no surprise that the staff is incredibly caring, adding to the charm of this country along with its climate and beautiful landscapes.

And what about the rooms! I felt like I was in a Kdrama, extremely spacious with LED TV, fridge, microwave, a bed for my wife, and a menu to order from the hospital restaurant...

Vu que l'on est au pays du sourire il ne pouvait en être autrement que d'avoir un personnel au petit soin, vraiment ce qui fait tout le charme de ce pays en plus de son climat et ses paysage magnifique.
 
Et que dire des chambres! J'avais l'impression d'être dans un Kdrama, extrêmement spacieuse avec TV led, frigo, micro-onde, lit pour mon épouse, un menu pour commander au restaurant de l'hopital...

The day of the surgery - Le jour de l'intervention

Arrived at 8 am, a series of tests (heart, blood, auscultation, X-ray) preceded my placement in the room, where I waited until 11 am for the surgical operation. A funny detail: here, no pants, but a Sarong (the traditional Thai skirt for men) in green. The pants will be for the next day.

Arrivée à 8h du matin, une série de tests (cœur, analyses sanguines, auscultation, rayon X) a précédé mon installation en chambre, où j'ai attendu jusqu'à 11h pour l'opération chirurgicale. Un détail amusant : ici, pas de pantalon, mais un Sarong (la jupe traditionnelle thaïlandaise pour les hommes) vert. Le pantalon sera pour le lendemain.

 
At 11 am, off to anesthesia. A top-notch team, with an anesthetist who relaxed me with his humor. Then, off to the operating room, where a team of 7 people was waiting for me. It only took a moment for me to go to the land of dreams.

À 11h, direction l'anesthésie. Une équipe au top, avec un anesthésiste qui m'a bien détendu avec son humour. Puis, direction le bloc opératoire, où une équipe de 7 personnes m'attendait. Il ne m'aura fallu qu'un instant pour partir au pays des rêves.

 
Two hours later, waking up, and the realization that someone had just "played" with my intestines 😅. The pain kicked in, as the operation involved not only removing the hernia but also adding a mesh inside. Here I am, turned into a cyborg 🤣.

Deux heures plus tard, le réveil, et la réalisation que quelqu'un venait de "triffouiller" mes intestins 😅. La douleur s'est fait sentir, l'opération consistant non seulement à retirer l'hernie, mais aussi à ajouter un filet à l'intérieur. Me voici devenu un cyborg 🤣.

 
After an hour in the recovery room, pampered by the nurses, back to the room where my wife was waiting for me. Confined to bed, exhausted by the experience, pain, and medications, I spent the next 16 hours sleeping, waking up every 4 hours by the nurses to check my heart and blood pressure.

Après une heure en salle de réveil, chouchouté par les infirmières, retour en chambre où ma femme m'attendait. Cloué au lit, épuisé par l'expérience, la douleur et les médicaments, j'ai passé les 16 heures suivantes à dormir, réveillé toutes les 4 heures par les infirmières vérifiant mon cœur et ma tension.

 
The next day I was already feeling a bit better, able to get up and walk slowly, a chance to see what my belly looked like.

Le lendemain je me sentais déjà un peu mieux, pouvant me lever et marcher doucement, l'occasion de voir un peu à quoi mon ventre ressemblait.

At the end of the morning, another round of tests, then a meeting with the doctor who took great pleasure in showing me the videos of the surgery. Really weird to see yourself from the inside 🤣.

After a bit of waiting in the room, for insurance information and medication, back home where I am now resting.

En fin de matinée, une nouvelle batterie de tests, puis un rendez-vous avec le docteur qui a pris un malin plaisir à me montrer les vidéos de l'opération. Vraiment bizarre de se voir de l'intérieur 🤣.
 
Après un bon repas et un peu d'attente en chambre, pour les informations de l'assurance et la médication, retour à la maison où je me repose désormais.
