Greetings to you all!
One thing I love about Thursday is its throwback vibe, especially when it comes to old songs. There is a special feeling that comes whenever I'm feeling to songs I used to love then—not in the 90s because I wasn't sensible then.
Also, I love listening to a particular radio programme where they bring out an original old song cover with its cover for listeners to vote on which one is more interesting.
On today's event, a very old popular highlife song was highlighted, and it's no other song than JOROMI
Uwaifo | Simi | Designed on canva
The original version of Joromi was done by an Edo Nigerian musician, Sir Victor Uwaifo. The song was released in 1965, and it won many awards due to the originality of its beats, tones, lyrics, and story behind the song.
According to what Sir Victor Uwaifo narrated in one of his videos;
Before the death of Joromi's father, he had warned him not to climb a particular palm tree, which Joromi defied, and when he climbed to the climax of the palm tree, he saw himself in the land of the death with many devils with 2 to 7 heads. Joromi's sister turned into a fly and landed on the land of death along side with Joromi, when she was beckoning her brother to climb down.
In the land of death, they met a wrestling contest, which Joromi adamantly joined, and he succeeded in defeating the devils with two to six heads.
It was the last devil with seven heads that was able to kill Joromi, but his sister saw a 'leaf of life'. She plucked it and used it to touch Joromi, and he bounced back to life. Immediately after he returned to lie, they (Joromi and his sister) took off, running back to the real world, and the devil with seven heads chased them. They got to the bridge between the Land of Death and the real world, and as Joromi was about to cross to the real world after his sister, the devil stretched forth his hand to the back of Joromi, and his nails scratched out what we know as the spine in our back today. Folktale 👌
This is the video of Sir Victor narrating the story.
This is the video for the song.
We have a lot of songs with the title 'Joromi', but Simi's version was the bomb.
This made Sir Victor Uwaifo sue Simi for 50 million naira for copyright infringement because she used "Joromi" as one of the titles of songs in her Simisola album.
This song is all about love, and if you're a lover of love, you'll love this piece.🥰
Which one do you find more interesting?
As for me, it's hard for me to pick one out of the two. The original version is too legendary and original. As a lover of highlife, I love the song even though I don't understand the Benin language used.
For Simi's version, I love the sweet feminine voice plus the danceable beat. The video play is top-notch too.
Which one do you prefer?
Thanks for reading.
