In A World Of No Loyalty

in blog •  3 years ago

It angers me often how little loyalty many have towards ANYTHING or ANYBODY in the world around them.

This dynamic was once again shoved in my face yesterday morning before I had to leave for work. The apartment complex I live at put in a dog park earlier this year, next to where I have to go to smoke off the property.

I was heading out there before leaving for work as I do everyday, and was confronted with a beautiful dog, who was crying with tail wagging as soon as she saw me. No human in sight, my heart sunk as I knew the dog had been dropped off and abandoned there.

I had already carried my tools out for work, so I baby talked to the dog hoping despite the sinking feeling in my stomach that the caretaker (I hate the word owner, as though we can own another living being) would be back before I finished my smoke. After finishing, I went back to my apartment to get my lunch pail ready in case I actually got a minute to eat (some days there isn't a break, so people suck everywhere really).

I hoped the dog would be reunited by the time I went back out. But no. She was still there, crying again as soon as she saw me.

I called the police, hating I couldn't just take her home. But I couldn't because I have a small Maltese who has Luxating Patellas in both back legs. My first allegiance is to her, she is part of my pack. An important part of my pack who makes all the bullshit I go through easier to put up with because of her golden heart.

In a perfect world, I would have owned property and could have segregated them enough to take on the responsibility of caring for another beautiful hearted animal. This dog was so gentle, and her cries were haunting to hear, reminding me of my lifetime of choices that led me to a position of impotence in acting on her behalf to save her and give her the home and love her gentleness deserves.

I waited as long as I could, knowing depending on traffic now I could be late and the construction project would be delayed until I got there. They legally can't stop until I have my traffic signs up and can direct the traffic flow through one lane.

It ate at me all day, not knowing the outcome. Made worse as I worked an eleven hour day. I looked online after I got home, and was relieved to see she was safe at the Humane Society. She looks happy in the picture they took of her, on a blanket. Much happier than she did yesterday morning when she cried in grief knowing she was abandoned by the one she trusted to love her and look out for her.

I drove over after work to the Humane Society to check on her. They couldn't let me see her, as the owner has a week to claim her before they take ownership and can put her up for adoption. But they assured me she was doing well, and that given her temperament that she will probably be adopted out quickly.

I hate that so many people have no loyalty, especially in cases like this. This dogs cries will haunt me, knowing the agony of abandonment will haunt her the rest of her life. Knowing that her fate might have been even worse making her time here in life even shorter.

I can't fathom how so many can treat others as disposable. Especially animals such as dogs, who if treated with love will blossom into loving beings who will never judge us for being who we are. Their love is pure, never needing a mask of pretension the way so many humans demand.

That dog is worthy of being cared for and loved. Deserving much more than being abandoned, a possible fate of always being alone now. Of being all by herself.

It is sad to read this story. Many people buy or adopt puppies without understanding that they are a great responsibility, it is like having a child and they become a member of the family. I hope she will soon be adopted by a family that will give her all the love she deserves.

Thank you, me too. I've been showing her picture to other people who bring their dogs to that dog park in the hopes they recognize her and by default the owner so I can have words with him/her. Today there was a man there with his two dogs that are around the same size as the dog. He asked me to text him the pic and he found the listing on Humane Society. He wants to show his wife and thinks they might take the dog once the 7 day waiting period is over. I hope so, as he seems like he loves dogs a lot.

Exactly, only these "children" will never leave the nest and will require our care the rest of their lives. Many tell me I cater to mine to much, but I don't feel that way. In all things she relies on me for eating, drinking, restroom, health issues and companionship. And I choose to think of it as a privilege. My little one has such a pure heart, it's an honor to be loved so much despite all of my many flaws.

Sometimes it is painful to see how people say they want a pet or an animal to keep them company according to their point of view. Many only do it for a couple of days and after that they abandon them. I know a person on Twitter who rescues many animals from the street and that's why they call her crazy. It seems that human nature is sometimes focused on things with less importance than helping another living being.

Yes, it's really sad. I force myself not to allow myself to stop extending gestures to others, despite the jadedness I have inside. My only redemption to my own failures is to be that which I wish others could be, and more, what I should have been when I failed to do for others what I wish for myself. It always starts with us, and these folks are a reminder there is never a moment to not be mindful that the world needs positive action to counter the negative action. It's like the world is one large organism and there are healthy cells (us) and dis-eased cells (them). We have to fight them off or they will infect the whole world and destroy it.

It breaks my heart that people could do this. Our species is seriously lacking in ethics and compassion.

I understand how you feel, I also like dogs very much. Hopefully she will find a good place where she can grow old - as it should be.

#peoplesuck would be a great community.
Mind you, the Humane Soc didn't sound especially humane: "Thank you, sir. We have rules. Now bugger off!"

#peoplesuck would be a great community.

Haha, yes it would. One would never run out of material to write about.

the Humane Soc didn't sound especially humane

Like with bills crafted by politicians, the title can be misleading. It wasn't to many years ago I would have had to find another answer and miss work completely probably. Many used to euthanize dogs that weren't adopted after a short period of time. Very Humane they were(n't). There ares till many who do.

https://www.animalrescueprofessionals.org/myth-vs-fact/humane-societies-no-kill/

One needs to research carefully the "humane" society in their area as it is used by many organizations. In fact, I not only had to have a talk with the 911 operator over what the police did with animals, I then had to google the local Humane Society to make sure they (locally) would not kill the dog if it isn't adopted. This used to be prevalent practice in many municipalities.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/03/upshot/why-euthanasia-rates-at-animal-shelters-have-plummeted.html

If it was that situation, I would have had to risk taking the dog in despite my worries over the dog I already have, as well as eat the 200.00 non refundable deposit and 50.00 a month in increased rent fees my piece of shit landlord demands.

Luckily I may have found someone to adopt the dog. I've been showing the picture I took to dog owners when I go smoke in the hopes someone will recognize it and be able to give me a description of the owner so we can "chat" about what they did. Today a man had me send him my pic in text, and believes he and his wife might adopt the dog once the week waiting period is over, despite there being a two dog limit here. He has two dogs about the same size as her, so I really hope he does.

That annoys me about people, they think that animals are objects and that they can get rid of them whenever they want. A pet is part of the family, but many people don't understand that.

I think that a person who is capable of that has no feelings because just thinking about leaving an innocent creature abandoned in a world so cruel and difficult would not let me sleep.

Once one of my little parrot escaped and it was very painful for me to think that some animal would eat it, because he was at home since he was little, when they have been domesticated they no longer have the same instincts and can hurt them more easily.

Once one of my little parrot escaped

Did it come back?

Yes, it came back the next day.

Have a happy day :)
