Reminder: Google will delete accounts that haven't been used for two years

in blog •  last year

Google has recently updated its policy on inactive Google accounts. According to the new policy, the maximum period of inactivity for Google accounts across all Google products and services has been adjusted to two years. This adjustment is effective immediately. Google stated that starting from December 1, 2023, it will delete inactive accounts and all their contents.

Google said that if multiple Google accounts are set up on a user's device, ensure that each account is used at least once every two years.

Google emphasized that before executing the deletion operation, Google will send an email notification to the user's Google account, and will also send notifications to their secondary email (if any).

Here's the full text of Google's notification email:

To effectively ensure your safety and protect your private information, Google always uses built-in security protections to prevent unauthorized access to your Google account. Ensuring your safety means that all Google products will follow strict privacy norms and try to minimize the storage time of your personal files and all related data. Even if you no longer use Google services, Google will do its best to protect your private information and prevent others from accessing your account without authorization.

Therefore, we have adjusted the maximum period of inactivity for Google accounts in all Google products and services to 2 years. This change takes effect today and applies to all inactive Google accounts (no one logs in or uses them for consecutive 2 years). Starting from December 1, 2023, Google will delete inactive accounts and all their contents.

What does this mean for you:

This change will not affect you unless your Google account has been inactive or has not been used to log in to any Google service for 2 consecutive years.

Although this change takes effect today, Google will not start forcibly deleting accounts until December 2023 at the earliest.

If your account is considered inactive, before taking any action or deleting any content from this account, Google will send several reminder emails to your current and secondary email (if provided) at least 8 months in advance.

Once a Google account is deleted, its corresponding Gmail address cannot be used to create a new Google account again.

How to keep your account active?

The simplest way to keep your Google account active is to ensure that the interval between account logins is less than 2 years. If you have logged in to your Google account within the past 2 years, this account will be considered active and will not be deleted.

Other ways to keep your account active include:

  • Read or send emails
  • Use Google Drive
  • Watch YouTube videos
  • Share photos
  • Download apps
  • Use Google Search
  • Log in to third-party apps or services using "Sign in with Google"

This policy has some exceptions. Examples include: Google accounts with "YouTube channels, videos, or comments; accounts with gift cards and a balance in the card; or accounts with a published app (such as accounts that host apps in the Google Play store). You can click here to see other exceptions to this policy.

Google also provides several tools to help you manage your Google account and back up your data with various options, including using the "Google Export" feature to download data, and using the Inactive Account Manager feature to plan how the system should handle your data after your account has been inactive for a period of time.

Google's primary task is to make it as easy as possible for you to keep your account active (if you choose to do so), and we will notify you in an appropriate manner before this change affects any of your accounts. Therefore, before deleting a Google account, Google will send email notifications to this account and its secondary email (if provided). Please be sure to update your secondary email in time."
