Happy Thursday, developers!
As you know, we are just surveying the state of development environments. The first results are already interesting. We will share the complete report with you after the survey closes in two weeks!
In the meantime, let's dive in and see the hottest programming languages according to this (and some other :) survey.
Most demanded programming languages
Did you know there are more than 200 programming languages, even though only a few are used in the industry? DevJobsScanner researched more than 7 million developer jobs to determine which ones are the most demanded.
JavaScript / Typescript
In the first place, with exactly half of you using JS! Her majesty, JavaScript! Along with Typescript, JS superset with type safety, is the most demanded programming language. Surprising? Probably not. In eight months, DevJobsScanner found astonishing 486K jobs that require JavaScript. This was expected because 98% of websites use JavaScript on the client side for web page behaviour.
Python
It's easy to learn, versatile and has one of the most significant communities. And 35% of you pushed it to 2nd place on our survey. Python usage goes from scripting for web applications and creating games to data analysis. It makes up for a total of 20% of jobs. In other words, every fifth job requires knowledge of Python.
HTML / CSS
Even though both HTML and CSS are not considered programming languages and are not included in DevJobsScanner research, 34% of you are actively using them. They represent the basic technology behind everything we see in a web browser. According to W3techs, HTML is used by 94.6% of all the websites whose markup language we know, while CSS is used by 97.1%.
PHP
Recently we wrote about PHP's importance and popularity, even though there are certain debates that its usage is decreasing. It's safe to say this is not true since you safely put it in the 4th place, and more than 80% of all websites today use PHP to run their servers. It is safe to say that PHP is not going anywhere. It is flexible, easy to learn, and compatible with cloud services, so no wonder there are more than 100K jobs requiring PHP.
Java
Intended to let developers write once and run anywhere, Java has always been one of the most popular languages, and according to you, it is in 5th place. It's easy to learn and can effectively run on any OS. This makes Java ideal for writing apps for mobile phones and computers, as well as remote processors, sensors, etc.
Why is this important?
Whether you're an experienced developer, just trying to tap into the industry, or maybe starting your career as a freelancer, it's extremely helpful to know which programming language to focus on. With this information, it's easier to find out which programming language suits you best, which one you need for your next project or which one is perhaps better to learn as a first language.
