Blockchain technology in food supply chain

in blockchain •  2 years ago

There is no limit to what extent blockchain technology can be used, previously it was centered only on the financial aspect of man's day-to-day activities, today it has gradually found use in different sectors which includes Agriculture, transportation, automobile industry, food, and beverage industries are no exception as blockchain technology has found use in building and improving our food processing facility using advanced tracking technology stored on distributed decentralized ledger to keep track of processed foods and beverages.

Although this technology isn't yet fully implemented in rural areas and cities, as it requires technical experts' knowledge and intensive start-up capital to set up, gradually, some industrial processes are now integrating the use of blockchain technology to store food supply data which helps in keeping track of where a particular farm product is gotten from, processing stages it has undergone important nutritional supplements it contains can all be seen by the final consumers scanning an attached QR code on the final product. This process does not only improve consumer confidence in the product it boosts the level of trust and increases transparency.

How blockchain is transforming supply chain

One important role blockchain technology is playing in today's society is making information immutable using a distributed ledger on a chain that can not be easily editable.

Wouldn't it be nice if you know, how safe the food you are consuming is?

With blockchain distributed ledger a consumer who goes to either a grocery store and picks up a fruit or beverage can easily get detailed information on a purchased food item, for example, the farm, the processing stages the origin of the product just by scanning a barcode on the purchased product.

Blockchain technology has the potential of improving food chain supply by storing product information for final consumers to access a detailed product source it can also be used for tracking transported food products making sure they are not affected or exceeding the date of delivery.

Importance of blockchain in food supply

  1. Food Safety and quantity; with blockchain traceability of food chain is ensured this helps increase the trust and transparency of users' interest.

  2. Increase efficiency; blockchain technology can be used to automatically track the food supply chain reducing human error.

  3. Security; Here blockchain can be used to safeguard supply chain databases against cyber attacks keeping users from tempering with data.

  4. Customer satisfaction; customers' ability to track products' origin would increase trust and satisfaction when making purchase.

In general, blockchain technology in the food supply chain will drastically improve transparency for users to feel safe in any consumable food products they are buying off the market and will help bridge the gap between farmers, transport users, and industries to seamlessly track the delivery stage of their products making sure they are delivered safe and not tempered.
