অনেকগুলো প্রজাতিই কণ্টকময়। একমাত্র কাঠজাতীয় লতা প্রকৃতির বাগানবিলাস সকলের মনোযোগ আকর্ষণসহ বিশ্বব্যাপী জনপ্রিয়তা অর্জন করেছে। বাংলাদেশের প্রায় সব এলাকাতে এই ফুলের দেখা পাওয়া যায়। এর বৈচিত্র্যপূর্ণ রঙিন মঞ্জরিপত্র ফুলের চারপাশে বিদ্যমান। তিনটি মঞ্জরিপত্রের মাঝখানে ফুটন্ত ফুলগুলো সাদা রঙের, ঘণ্টাকৃতির ও ছোট প্রকৃতির হয়।

বুগেনভিলিয়া প্রজাতির বাগানবিলাসে উজ্জ্বল রঙের কাগজের মতো মঞ্জরিপত্র রয়েছে যা অস্পষ্ট ফুলের চারদিকে ঘিরে থাকে। এ প্রজাতির গাছগুলো ২০ থেকে ৩০ মিটার পর্যন্ত উঁচু হয়। উষ্ণ আবহাওয়ায় বছরের অধিকাংশ সময় ফুলে সুশোভিত থাকে। এ প্রজাতির ফুলগুলো ‘কাগজের ফুল’ নামে পরিচিত।

মঞ্জরিপত্রগুলো বেগুনি, নীলচে, হলুদ, সাদা, গোলাপি অথবা গাঢ় লাল রঙের হয়ে থাকে। এক ইঞ্চি বা ততোধিক লম্বাকৃতির পাতা হয়। এক ধরনের বাগানবিলাস গাছ রয়েছে যারা সহায়ক গাছ কিংবা খুঁটিতে চড়ে কখনো কখনো এক শ ফুট লম্বাও হতে পারে। বুগেনভিলিয়া প্রজাতির বাগানবিলাসে অনেক ক্ষুদ্রাকৃতির মঞ্জরিপত্র থাকে। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই এর ফুলগুলো ক্ষণস্থায়ী হয়।জানুয়ারি-মার্চ ফুল ধরার প্রধান সময় কিন্তু কোনো কোনো জাতের গাছে প্রায় সারা বছরই অল্পসংখ্যক ফুল দেখা যায়। ফুলগুলোর একটা থেকে আরেকটার দূরত্ব থাকে খুব কম। ফলে ফুল ফুটলে মনে হয় পুরো গাছ যেন ফুলে ফুলে ছেয়ে রয়েছে। তবে আসল সত্য হচ্ছে কাগজের মত রঙ্গিন যেটিকে আমরা ফুল মনে করি সেটি আসলে ফুল নয়। আসল ফুলটি বেশ ছোট, ঐ কাগজের মত দেখতে তিনটি পত্রমঞ্জরীর ঠিক মাঝে লবঙ্গের মতো দেখতে যে অংশটি রয়েছে সেটিই মূলত ফুল।

মঞ্জরিপত্রগুলি কাগজের মত পাতলা হয় বলে এই গাছের অপর নাম কাগজ ফুল বা কাগজি ফুল। ফল সরু, ৫ লতি যুক্ত ও একটিমাত্র বীজ সম্বলিত।

এর তেমন কোন ভেষজ গুণের কথা আমার জানা নাই। কীট-পতঙ্গমুক্ত গাছ হিসেবে বাগানবিলাসের পরিচিতি রয়েছে।
