This pizza has some Mozzarella cheese in its folded edges.
Pizza that we ate with my parents as our New year feast...in the afternoon.
Yesterday I couldn't decide some special food that I want to eat with my parents and I end-up buying a family-sized pizza with "all meat" flavor or toppings. It has some ham slices, bacon, salami, some special sausages, and maybe beef meat. I also ordered some spaghetti but it turned out to be carbonara which has some white sauce but is still nice to eat.
Mother was planning to cook some fried noodle dish but since we already had these foods, she just didn't bother anymore because we are already satisfied for the day and night. Both my parents went to bed early as normal because we do not planned to eat together and celebrate new year.
We spent a lot of New years without father because he was abroad working as a heavy equipment mechanic but since it was like that ever since we were young with my siblings, it isn't that bad for us.
Anyway, the typical fid that my mother would prepare are Spaghetti, that sweet style spaghetti with sauce made out of tomato sauce and banana ketchup with ground pork and slices of hotdogs. She will also make fruit salad out of canned fruit cocktail, canned pineapple tidbits, slices of apples, and some grapes mixed with condensed milk and heavy cream. We will also include some little cubes of cheese plus some young coconut meat, local pine nuts gel locally called as "Kaong", and some "Nata de Coco preserve" to make up the fruit salad.
Barbecue is also prepared by skewering bits of meat and then broiled over hot coals. I also remember my mother making macaroni salad which is made by cooking the elbow macaroni and then adding strips of cooked chicken breast, some raisins, red bell pepper bits, some pineapple tidbits and if course the mayonnaise.
We also would cook the UBE tuber that we planted from the last year's ube plant and I was still wondering up to now why it was that long to harvest those tubers but it is one of the delectable foods that we prepare as early as the Christmas season. It is so delicious because it is home-made and we used to only put condensed milk and then lime rind juice extract is added to give it a very pleasant flavor. My parents had made some Ube a few years ago but since they used evaporated milk and then sugar, it doesn't taste like we used to before when we were just kids with us and my mother. Now my parents aren't that interested anymore in preparing foods for these two occasions so I just end-up buying one big Pizza and some pasta for the three of us to eat for our lunch and dinner during the past new years eve.
When we were younger with my siblings, I really anticipate the new year celebration because in those times there were no regulations about acquiring fireworks much less lighting them up everywhere. So if you have the money, you can go and make a trip to one of my province's towns which is famous for making or manufacturing firecrackers and buy there all sorts of firecrackers from those deemed as child-friendly, i.e., children are the ones who uses them, and then those powerful illegal firecrackers that can really main a person if it is handled incorrectly, i.e., literally handling the live firecracker with bare hands until their fingers and hands are blown-off because of course "not all tools in the shed are sharp". You can even buy black powder of sorts so you can make your own firecracker if you have some idea on how to make one although because firecrackers from those years 1980's to 90's we just cheap compared today where only those that are enthusiastic in putting budget over it can fire a nice amount during the new years eve.
The fun of so many firecrackers going off at the same time plus in some areas burning tires like we did back then at the same time is pure fun for everyone to witness. It is once a year fun activity especially for young folks and kids that does it because it is unlike any other festive season as if everyone had won something and they are celebrating it by making as much noise using lighted strong firecrackers of many varieties.
In my case I was conditioned about trying to be happy and cheery to the best of my ability to do so believing that being happy at the turn of the hands of the clock it midnight will make me happy and cheery in the succeeding year. So me and my brothers would try to play some music inside the house.
Also, we had the belief that doing the traditional midnight feast and preparing round fruits even with pineapple will make us lucky because round fruits symbolizes money while sticky foods like some rice cakes and sweet purple Yam pudding symbolizes tight-knit union of the family. These are Chinese traditions that influenced our culture for celebrating the regular new year whereas the Chinese new year is celebrated only by the Chinese in my country.
When I was younger, the public transport tricycles would drag pieces of metal like metal corrugated roofing as they drive-by. Me seeing it makes me happy because, it is unusual and also for me it is fun. Me and my friends would then do it too with using our bikes and have some fun making noise. All the while some of my friends would light up some firecracker throwing it anywhere, to the road, on top of neighbor's concrete fence, or when they see their friends walking by and throwing it at them too and goodluck. Even toads are subjected to fun where a "five star" firecracker will be shoved to its mouth, letting it go and witness the carnage and the fun will get into its height if pieces of the frog's innards would strike one of your pal's clothes or leg, it really brought back fun memories of the lost fun of that new year celebration era.
Anyway, it was a belief that noises would drive bad spirits away which is why I would throw firecrackers within the dimply-lit side of our house because it is always dark there during the night. Well now these beliefs are a thing of the past for me, I do not believe that firecrackers can drive evil spirits away but singing hymns offered to God will while preparing symbolic food items on the table at new year's eve to make you lucky will not do anything if you are not making steps to make wealth.
However, what is true is that it is fun to celebrate the new years especially with what we had been doing during my younger years like making our own bamboo or even steel canon powered by calcium carbide gas to make a loud boom sound as an alternative to lighting-up a firecracker while lighting-up an illegal firecracker is superbly fun because it is louder dangerous, exciting to do and really so fun. But now even our barrio had announced that firing firecrackers are illegal now so the noise created now is so much less than before because nobody around here in my barrio had lighted up their own firecrackers and it is not that so much fun anymore but in fact frustratingly boring, a price to pay for safety concerns enforced by the government.
The government I guess has to do it to lessen that cases of accidents where year after year when I was younger, so much young people and even adults would lose a fingers, hands, lives, because and property fires caused by flying firecrackers would happen. The great fun of the former way of celebrating New year got sacrificed because of safety concerns and I think it is worth it rather having lots of people with incomplete fingers and hands in society.
