A few days ago, one of the vendors of fruits and other foodstuff that I was purchasing some of the fruits from posted a peculiar food that I always wanted to eat. So it got my attention and so I ordered a few bunch of it for 120 PHP so that I can finally experience on what it tastes like because I was longing to eat it for many years now for the reason that nobody or no vendor is offering it around here in our neighborhood.

The main origin of this fiddlehead fern was from the province up north beside our province because they have areas there where this fiddlehead fern is abundant and so some people over there would harvest it to be sold in the markets there. But because there is now a wide exposure for selling and ordering such commodities, it can reach many buyers and resellers which is why I was able to buy it via the vendor nearby that bought it directly from the source.

It got delivered on last Saturday afternoon so I was not able to eat it until yesterday. I was supposed to have it with a grilled fish over charcoals but my mother happened to borrow a flat griller from her friend which looks like a shallow frying pan and cooked the big Tilapia fish using it over the stove. In turn, the tilapia fish ended-up cooked like it was fried and of course I was disappointed because it is just cooked with no flavor of a regular grilled fish over charcoals which should give it a smoky flavor which I was expecting. Apparently, my mother grilled the fish over that supposed griller over a low flame which is why it ended-up to be just somewhat more fried than grilled.

I am glad that I have a little appetite for eating these days because of a better dialysis quality compared from the past years and it somewhat improved on my eating behavior because it adds the cleaning effect on my blood to further lower my toxin levels for urea and nitrogen compounds which reduced my nausea in-between dialysis treatment sessions.

Also I was having a Mango fruit with my meals as well and it also helped about giving me more appetite to eat and at least making me to consume more calories in the process. However since it is not a mango season anymore, these last few batches of mangoes have a less quality and they do not taste as sweet as before although they are relatively cheaper to buy now. So I guess that the quality or the taste commands its price in that regard but of course I am still enjoying ripe Mangoes despite of their blander taste.

Anyway, the taste of the fiddle fern is somewhat plain but sweetish, its texture was I chew it is very pleasant and there is no aftertaste. It is not chewy and stringy but is rather on the crunchy side. It is more pleasant to eat compared to other salad greens like lettuce or sweet potato greens although they have unique taste profile of their own. I guess that we can pickle it using vinegar and sugar plus black pepper and create a unique side-dish as palate cleanser when you eat it with other main course dishes like fried or roasted meat or fish with rice.

I am looking forward about having some of these fiddlehead fern greens again because it is truly nice to eat although it seems like it is high in Phosphorus and I would probably have it as I described above, a pickled fern side-dish or perhaps have it prepared like I would for cucumber when I am eating cucumber and that is mixing it with some vinegar with water, sugar, and ground black peppers but with added cucumber slices and eat it either by itself or together with my usual meal later in the day as my final meal because I am only eating twice a day without much snacking in between.
