For Junaid Hussain, Ukraine was not a country where war could break out at any time.

For them, it was a country where "affordable and quality education for students from poor countries" is no less than a blessing.

Junaid hails from Balochistan and is the first Pakistani student to return home from Kiev Medical University in Ukraine.

Speaking to the BBC, he said that when he arrived in Ukraine in December last year, he immediately realized that the educational environment there was excellent and the people were elegant. He and his family were very happy to know this and they thought that they would return home only after completing their degree.
But when Russian forces entered Ukraine, they had to abandon their plans and return to Pakistan.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: We want to tell your story: Are you or any of your acquaintances in Ukraine?

He described the six days of war in which he spent his time in the basement of a university hostel as "indescribable."

According to Junaid, Pakistan's embassy staff was not as active in evacuating its citizens as other countries' embassies seemed to be, which caused some Pakistani students trouble.

However, a Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman and Pakistan's ambassador to Poland responded to the students' complaints that hundreds of students and civilians had been evacuated so far despite the limited staff.
