Targeting your behavior with remorse instead of punishing yourself

in article •  3 years ago

Punishing oneself is one of the ways to feel good. Punishing himself in various ways when he is aware of his mistake is a way some people resort to.

These methods of punishment can sometimes be like depriving yourself of something you love or physically hurting yourself.

When he makes a mistake or forgets something he should not forget, the method of self-punishment turns into a kind of conscience and mind relief therapy. The punishment given is eating foods that make you gain weight, not doing a favorite activity, starving yourself, etc. may be in shape.

In corporal punishment, hitting oneself and causing permanent injuries to the body may occur.

When children do anything they shouldn't; Simple punishments such as painting the wall, spilling their food on the floor, having them clean the paint on the wall, and having them clean the spilled food are among the recommendations of the experts and the preferences of the parents. The important thing is to be aware of his mistake and not to repeat it.

But in the example here, the punisher and the one who punishes are different people. The fact that the person punishing and punishing is the same person in self-punishment proves that one is aware of the mistake made. There is a mistake that the person punishes himself.

Sometimes, criticizing yourself harshly and dictating to your mind that you are always wrong is one of the options for self-punishment.

The main purpose of punishing yourself or the child you are a parent is to not make that mistake again. Instead of punishing oneself for a mistake that is aware of, it will target the behaviors of regret, and thus the targeted behaviors will change.

Instead of giving similar punishments, a short-term regret will be more effective on the behaviors and will help to prevent them from being repeated.

The movie "Professor and the Madman", which I see as a masterpiece in terms of cinema history, is about the creation and writing of the Oxford English Dictionary. The movie is adapted from Simon Winchester's book "The surgeon of crowthorne" and transferred to the big screen. Let's assume that many people watched the movie since its release date is 1999.

The movie evokes feelings of hatred, pity, love and respect towards a person at the same time, I think that the production phase of the dictionary is secondary in this state, but the reason why I chose the movie as an example in this article is the self-punishment method of the insane character!

Our character finds himself in a mental hospital because of a man he accidentally killed, and later falls in love with the wife of the man he killed. This contradiction, regret triggers his existing insanity point. After he realizes that his woman is not indifferent to him, he goes up to the scene where he cuts his penis. Moreover, this cutting process is quite interesting, absurd and terrible, as it includes the "punishment" within the punishment.

Of course, it's not the penis cutting punishment that makes the movie a masterpiece! Sean Penn is at the top in terms of acting, he makes the movie the subject of the article because of penile cutting, self-punishment.

Although the point reached by the regret experienced with the urge to punish oneself is meaningless, it is a phenomenon that exists in the lives that continue. There are people who act and end their lives just out of the urge to punish themselves or their loved ones. The danger and callousness of the peak reached as a result of certain deposits gives an idea about what human beings can do.

The result would be dangers and irreversible exorbitant mistakes, but it would be as absurd to set limits on what people can do with self-punishment as diagnosing a cold for every sneeze.
