"Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"
Mixed Media,31.8x41cm,2022

This is used as a proverb meaning "there is no way to explain which came first" or "going in circles," so I always thought it was a waste of time to even think about it, but that is not the case in the world of science.

This issue was discussed in the "Science Why Why 110" section of Gakken Kids' Net. To summarize it.

According to the theory of evolution, the chicken's ancestor was a bird called the Sekishoku Yakei, which lived in Southeast Asia and was domesticated by the chicken. The Sekishoku Yakei has red feathers.
Following the sequence of events, first, there was a parent bird with red feathers. That parent bird laid an egg, and from that egg a chicken with white feathers was born by mutation. In other words, according to the theory of evolution, the answer is "the egg came first.

In the field of biochemistry, the protein contained in both the eggshell and the hen's ovary has the function of inducing the formation of the eggshell in the hen's body, and without this protein in the ovary, the egg cannot be produced. In other words, some people think that without the hen, the egg cannot be produced, and that the hen comes first.

In other words, there are still both opinions, and in the future, it may be settled which came first.
