in art •  3 years ago

My latest drawing from my Indigenous Art and History Class.

Totem :
indoodem

my clan

Note:
There is no simple independent word for clan, totem.

A personal prefix goes with the dependent noun stem /=doodem-/ clan to make a full word:
nindoodem, indooden, ndoodem my clan

Gidoodem your clan (2s-3s)

The Anishinaabe, like most Algonquian-speaking groups in North America, base their system of kinship on patrilineal clans or totems.

The Ojibwe word for clan (doodem) was borrowed into English as totem. The clans, based mainly on animals, were instrumental in traditional occupations, intertribal relations, and marriages. Today, the clan remains an important part of Anishinaabe identity.

I am a Métis youth (Ojibwe/French) taking a course on Indigenous Art and History in Canada. I will share my work here along with some of the thoughts and ideas I have while creating these works. I will also share some of the Ojibwe and Algonquin language we are learning
