An unexpected reaction of the immune system to specific foods is known as a food allergy. While there may be some similarities in the symptoms, this isn't the same as an intolerance to certain foods.

The immune system in your body keeps you healthy by fending off viruses and other threats. A food allergy response occurs when your body's defenses interprets a food or an ingredient in a food as a "danger" to your health. Immunoglobulin E, or IgE, is an antibody that is produced by the immune system. These respond to substances in food or to food itself. Asthma, hives, mouth itching, breathing difficulties, stomachaches, vomiting, or diarrhea are some allergic symptoms that may result from this.

Food allergies happen when an individual's immune system becomes activated by a particular food or ingredient and then "overreacts," producing an excessive amount of antibodies and hormones in the body that lead to symptoms such as swelling, itching, and other related issues.

An allergy is a substance that causes a reaction; milk, shellfish, and peanuts are a few examples. A food-allergic reaction can cause anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal medical emergency marked by a rapid heart rate, enlargement of the lips, tongue, and throat, disorientation, and trouble breathing, in addition to itchy skin, scratching, and digestive problems.

Unlike intolerance to food which is a distinct illness that doesn't entail an immune system reaction, most actual food allergies occur in childhood. A physician may be able to diagnose a food allergy in a patient by taking a patient's medical history and performing a physical examination, skin examination, blood test, or carefully supervised food challenge.

It is crucial to stay away from that meal as soon as the allergen is recognized. People with severe food allergies, both adults and children, should always have an emergency supply of epinephrine on hand in case they accidentally consume it.

After consuming the meal, allergic reactions may appear minutes to hours later. The most typical signs of a meal allergy are the following. However, each individual may experience symptoms slightly differently. The following symptoms could be present:

1 . A scratchy or tight throat or voice
2 . Constipation and cramping
3 . Throat pain and nausea
4 . Raised, itchy lumps called hives
5 . Skin swell
6 . Itching
