Alex Jones opens rehabilitation centre for gay frogs

Alex Jones, conspiracy theorist and most banned person on the internet once screamed "I don’t like them putting chemicals in the water that turn the freakin frogs gay!”. This became inspiration for many viral memes and ridicule for its hilarity but as is often the case there is a kernel of truth in the rants of Alex Jones. In a 2002 study by Dr. Tyrone Hayes, an endocrinologist at the University Of California, on the effect of the herbicide atrazine on frogs it was discovered that levels as low as 0.1 parts per billion were enough to interfere with the sexual development of frogs by lowering testosterone levels. Fertility is as low as 10 percent and in some cases the frogs turn into hermaphrodites (having both male and female sex organs). Subsequent studies showed that leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) collected from atrazine-contaminated streams in the Midwest of the USA, including from areas up to 1,000 miles from where atrazine is applied, often had eggs in their testes. Remember this is a common herbicide used in food production and sprayed onto lawns and golf courses. It is now found in waterways and even tap water. The amount of atrazine in tap water to be considered 'safe' is 3 parts per billion, yet Hayes showed tadpoles raised in atrazine-contaminated water become hermaphrodites at 0.1 parts per billion. That's 30 times lower than levels allowed in drinking water by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency! Is it any wonder that male fertility is at its lowest ever?
