Addictions destroy families

in addictions •  2 years ago

Yesterday I was having a chat with one of my son's friend. She is a young girl, lost her father at a very young age while she was in her teens. Her father was heavily addicted to drinking and smoking. When she was talking to me about her life, I was remembering my own. It was like a repeat telecast, someone telling me my own story. My dad was also on heavy alcohol addiction and as children me and my sister suffered a lot because of his addictions. We spent more time in hospitals then at home, and the other thing to deal with was his high temperament in that state.

Smoking, Drinking, Pills, Gambling or any such harmful addictions has never done any good for anyone. The only thing they are capable of doing is destroying families and leaving deep wounds and scars for them. I do understand that it is not easy to quit, it is a sickness that can completely destroy you physically and mentally. But if that person understands what is more valuable in life probably they will make the decision to quit.

It is not like that people have not quit, it is a lot of will power that is required, but one can for sure. When the girl was talking to me, I could feel her pain and I could understand what she must have gone through as a child. When children grow up in such environments it is possible for them also to stray off as they grow up. I was glad to see that this girl is a very sensible one and she has build up on her spiritual energy. Her father is no more and the family feels relieved. It is so unfortunate to know that your family members will feel better with your loss.

My hubby also had a smoking addiction. I pursued him to quit and he gave up completely for 3 years, but lately at some parties he was again tempted to smoke and he started with 1 or 2 cigarettes a day. I am feeling very disappointed with him and I keep nagging him all the time to quit it completely. Anyways he has gone through such major health issues in the last 2 years that it scares me to even think about it that he can fall ill again.

If one member of the family is addicted to these vices, the peace of whole family gets disturbed. If they fall sick, it is as good as the whole family getting sick. Those days when I spent with my dad in the hospitals will always remind me of the pain that not only he had to go through but even I had to go through at such a young age.

There is no pleasure in these things, there is only pain. Pain for self and pain for your family.
