#SublimeSunday - Garden Time!

in actifit •  2 years ago

With temperatures in the high 20s leading into the weekend, it was going to be time to start tackling yard work. Some new growth and even the first blooms of the year are up.

I don’t go overboard like many neighbours but I definitely have plenty of cleanup to do. I like to leave the fallen leaves on the lawn over the winter to break down and add some mulch to the lawn, and the pollinators find winter homes in them. That’s my justification for waiting til spring to clean out last years dead stuff from the flowerbeds and garden boxes.

Before that, I made a stop at the new office to pull the painters tape, remove the painting gear, and prepared for our first meeting there on Monday. Just a team meeting to catch up on projects and plan the week.

It wouldn’t be nice to paint the whole office and not do a little at home too. The family has petitioned a while to repaint the kitchen to a lighter more neutral colour. So the rollers, trays and brushes will be used for another room at home this week.

I managed to at least start the yard cleanup before the sprinkles started in the afternoon. Mr fuzzyface enjoyed the out door time with people to play with and didn’t seem the least bit guilty for his part in making the yard look like a winter war zone. I gathered a few of the planters, assembled some more seeding trays, and didn’t really get to the garden boxes. Plenty of time to get it done but lots to do over coming weekends leading into summer. Yard works is not as sublime the results when you are done.

The buds are JUST starting to appear on the trees in this last week of hot weather. Only a week or so ago, they were bare and only the bravest birds had returned. If you look closely, there are buds and a male and female cardinal among them. The rain didn’t last long but we are in for a couple cool days.

One of the coolest signs of spring I found was my little hops vines already sprouting! I planted the rhizomes late last year and didn’t bring the pot indoors so I was not even sure it would survive. Looks like they are hearty enough for winter and are early starters. I may move them to their forever home in the butterfly garden and have them climb a string to the peak of our roof.

I may have my own hops to brew beer with this year! Tall about another feather in the cap of a #beerologist!

Sprinty Mcwrestlerson needed some time in the dog park of course. It wouldn’t be a Sunday without that!

I wrapped the day up with a trip to the hockey game. We are in the finals with the Fighting Irish of the Western Ontario Super Hockey League title on the line. The good guys are now up 3-0 in the series and only have 1 more win to take the championship. Next game is on the road an hour away on Friday and I am half tempted to take a road trip in case they wrap it up. Otherwise, it will be a beer Saturday final game possibility next week.

All in all, a pretty sublime Sunday indeed!
