Turkish turtledove - a smaller and calmer variety of pigeons

This beautiful bird, belonging to the pigeon family, although it is quite common, is not very often seen in urban agglomerations. He is timid, does not like large groups, likes peace and life in pairs.

In contrast to the often aggressive pigeons, it is a gentle and calm bird.

In my neighborhood, he has his favorite place in the park, because he often sits in a large feeder, where he can count on good food.

This bird is the Turkish turtledove, or in other words the "Sierpówka". The name of the sickle cell comes from the black stripe around the neck, surrounded by a white border that resembles a sickle. On the other hand, another name, the Turkish turtledove, comes from the fact that it came to Europe from Turkey from the Ottoman times.

The bird is quite fertile, it can have up to 6 broods per season, so it can already be found in almost all of Europe.

This bird has a slender build, it is much smaller than the common pigeon. It has a long tail, gray-gray plumage with brown tints on the back.

My observations show that the bird is quite picky when it comes to food. He likes grains the most, such as buckwheat or sunflower seeds, but necessarily without the shell. He does not move larger food that he cannot break down.

Enjoy 😉
