My Actifit Report Card: June 3 2024 What Are Elder Orphans?

in actifit •  7 months ago

I came across a video on Elder Orphans today, also known as solo agers. These are older folks who no longer have parents and who don't have much social support so they are mostly alone. We're all getting older and we probably don't want to think about it. Us younger people tell ourselves that we don't have to be concerned about it but maybe we should for 2 reasons.

First we can assess our level of attachments with family and friends so we'll have someone to care about us when we're older. And/or we can build as much wealth and resources as possible so we can afford the care we may need when we're old.

Second we can look amoung our family and friends and see if there are older people that we can help now. There is a need for this. The lady named Allison who made this video says 12% of people over 50 are Elder Orphans, that is 1 in 8 people.

So maybe this in uncomfortable for some of us to think about. But we can't spend all our life playing games and consuming all kinds of entertainment. Maybe we can seek out older folks and help them out.
