My Actifit Report Card: August 28 2023 - Do You Drink? On Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer

So I had a brief conversation with Bing AI about drinking. Specifically about drinking wine and alcohol in the #Bible. I'll paste that in further down.

That reminded me of the 1977 electric blues hit by George Thorogood. Its a longer song clocking in at 8 and a half minutes. The singer is getting drunk at the bar and tells us how he got to this state. Check it out, and let me know in the comments about things you like to drink. Specifically adult beverages but its your comment so write whatever you want! 😀👍

As for me, i enjoy a can of beer now and then. Maybe once or twice a week, sometimes less often. I have wine occasionally and something harder rarely.

I was pretty sure the bible doesn't prohibit drinking but doesn't like drunkenness. I had this chat with ChatGPT built into Microsoft' search engine Bing...

Is it true that Jesus made wine as his first miracle and that he had wine at the last supper?

Yes, it is true that Jesus made wine as his first miracle and that he had wine at the last supper. According to the Gospel of John, Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding in Cana of Galilee, where he revealed his glory and his disciples believed in him¹. This was the first of the seven signs that Jesus performed in the Gospel of John². The other six signs are curing the nobleman's son, healing the paralytic, feeding the five thousand, walking on water, opening the eyes of a blind man, and raising Lazarus from the dead¹.

At the last supper, Jesus shared a cup of wine with his apostles, saying it was the covenant in his blood³. This was part of the Jewish Passover feast, which involves four cups of wine. Scholars believe that Jesus used the third cup, known as the cup of redemption, to institute the sacrament of the Eucharist or Holy Communion⁴. The wine symbolizes the blood of Christ, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins³. Christians commemorate this event by celebrating the Lord's Supper or Mass, where they receive bread and wine as the body and blood of Christ.

So it seems the bible is okay with drinking wine. What else does it say about drinking alcoholic drinks?

The Bible has a lot to say about drinking alcoholic drinks, both positive and negative. Here are some of the main points:

  • Drinking wine or other alcoholic beverages is not a sin in itself, but drunkenness is. The Bible warns against the dangers of intoxication, such as losing self-control, impairing judgment, harming health, and leading to other sins¹²⁴. The Bible also condemns those who cause others to stumble by drinking or offering alcohol¹³.
  • Drinking wine or other alcoholic beverages can also be a blessing from God, a sign of his provision and goodness, and a source of joy and celebration. The Bible praises wine as a gift from God that gladdens the heart of man¹²⁴. Jesus himself drank wine and used it as a symbol of his blood in the Last Supper². He also performed his first miracle by turning water into wine at a wedding feast².
  • Drinking wine or other alcoholic beverages is a matter of personal conscience and liberty, but also of responsibility and love. The Bible does not prohibit drinking alcohol, but it also does not command it. Some people may choose to abstain from alcohol for various reasons, such as health, conviction, or devotion¹²⁴. Others may choose to drink alcohol in moderation and with wisdom¹²⁴. The Bible teaches that whatever we do, we should do it for the glory of God and the good of others³⁴.
