On my nightly walk tonight I was listening to music via my Bluetooth headband. A song came on with a really good beat to walk to. It starts out slow but it builds stronger and faster. Just what I like for a good workout.
The song is Gloria by Patti Smith. The very first lyric is something I never heard anything like before.
Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine!
This brings up heavy theological concepts like sustitutionary atonement and propitiation. Did Jesus who is also God sacrifice himself to himself to satisfy something in himself? I have no idea. Is it moral to allow an innocent one to suffer your punishment? Again, its beyond me. Is religion making up the problem of sin and then giving us the answer to its made up problem? I am neither a theologian nor a philosopher.
All I know is that this song rocks and makes me walk fast and with vigor! Do I care that she is singing this song about her female lover? Not really. I'm just trying to motivate my workout.
This weekend I also watched part of the award winning 2013 mivie called Blue Is The Warmest Colour. It's about a 15 year old French girl who, near the start of the movie, has sex with a male school mate but she's thinking about an older blue haired female artist she recently met.
Not much later she is intimate with this woman who is maybe 10 years older than her. The scenes are quite graphic but there is a beauty in the cinematography.
Does it bother me that they are both women? Not really. How about the age difference? That's contrversial. But they seem to have genuine love and respect for each othet which I think is vital in any romantic relationship. The movie got a NC -17 rating so stay away if you don't want to see graphic scenes.
So between the song and the movie I guess I was a bit out of my comfort zone and my level of understanding this weekend. Maybe its good to stretch our thinking sometimes?
I hope you had a great weekend!
