I played hockey for Avon and Somerset over 55s team today. Given how the weather has been recently, I was concerned about keeping hydrated, so I made sure I had plenty of water and electrolytes with me. I was therefore quite surprised as we drove through a heavy thunder shower on the way to the game!
The game was against Devon, who are known for being a very good team. I was personally feeling confident as I tend to be fitter than most people in my age group. - that arrogance quickly came back to bite, though, as I pulled glute muscle as I went in for an early tackle. That was only about 5 minutes into the game.
I hobbled off the pitch and massaged myself, and stretched for about 5 minutes before thinking I could play on. I was feeling guilty as we had no substitutes and were, therefore, a player down. I went back on, into my normal position at the back, but I only lasted about a minute before realising there was no way I could carry on playing as I normally do.
From the start of the second quarter, I was therefore put up front, my job being just be in an attacking position and force the opposition to use someone to mark me. Amazingly, I actually managed to get a couple of shots on goal even though I could do no more than hobble around. (No, I didn't actually score)
The game finished in a 2 - 2 draw.
I'm now back home sitting on an ice pack and worrying about how long it will be before I can get back to my running.
Thank you for reading, and I'll be back tomorrow. - Hopefully.
