Mauerblümchen: Thursday July 11 2024

in actifit •  4 months ago

There's this German term for flowers on a wall: "Mauerblümchen" [ˈmaʊ̯ɐˌblyːmçən]. It literally translates to: wallflowerette. It isn't much used to talk about flowers, though. It describes a person, usually a woman, that doesn't get much attention because their beauty isn't obvious.

How does that make sense? A flower on a wall is so much easier to notice than in a meadow?!? I guess if it sounds poetic enough, it doesn't actually have to make sense.

Thanks for your time!
